Students will provide a written account of experiencing another person’s culture other than his or her own or one you/they are familiar. Based on your research, compare the state criminal statute with the historical common law to see how the elements of the crime have evolved.
Write a short essay, at least 1,250 words or five typewritten or computer-generated pages, describing the elements of the current state statute, the elements of the historical common law, and comparing the elements and how they have changed. Discuss possible reasons for the changes in the elements, how the interaction of criminal justice agencies and the law may have contributed to these changes, and suggest new changes in the statute, based on society’s needs today.

Activity #5-Small Group Altercation

Read the following scenario and describe your approach and techniques used to assisting the situation.
Scenario: Three girls are fighting over a piece of purple construction paper in the art area. They begin to yell and rip the paper out of one another’s hands.
Response 1: When Ms. Janice hears the girls arguing, she walks over and says, “That’s enough. You girls have been bothering each other all day.” She rips the paper out of the girls’ hands and throws it away.
She then says all three girls must play somewhere else in the room, each in a separate area. The girls begin to cry and say they want to stay together. Ms. Janice refuses to let them remain as a group.
Response 2: Ms. Shelia hears a commotion in the room she walks over and says, “It looks like there’s a problem here and you’re getting angry. What is the problem?” She listens to the girls explain. They each try to interrupt each other and continue fighting, but she makes sure all sides are heard.
After they have explained the situation, Shelia summarizes what she has heard. “It sounds like Simone wants to use the purple paper to make a card for her mom, and Destiny wants to make a picture. Simone, what do you think would be fair? Destiny, what do you think would be fair?” The girls arrive at a compromise all can agree to. Ms. Sheila stays close while they begin acting on the compromise.

In 2020, an online petition calling on Trader Joe’s to remove its “racist branding and packaging” from its stores had gathered thousands of signatures. The Change.org petition requested that the grocery store chain follow other food companies’ moves to adjust their branding and packaging to avoid racial stereotypes. Initially, Trader Joe’s said it would change its branding strategy for ethnic foods but sharply reversed course.
