Theory and Education
According to Wills and McEwen (2019), learning happens when individuals incorporate new knowledge and interact with their environment, which must occur over time. On the other hand, teaching is an act that promotes learning (Wills & McEwen, 2019). There are numerous methods of learning and teaching. Understanding how learning occurs allows educators to adapt to the environment to promote success.
Theory and Nursing Education
Lee and Son (2021) evaluated simulation problem-based learning and demonstration-based learning in nursing students studying Papanicolaou smear education. Problem-based learning employs predefined clinical situations and case studies to reinforce skills and knowledge in students (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Educators may use simulated clients with this approach to facilitate learning. Lee and Son (2021) used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group. Nursing students were randomly assigned to the control group or experimental group. The control group served as the demonstration group, while the students in the experimental group participated in simulation problem-based learning. Lee and Son (2021) found that as compared to the control group, the experimental group reported a significant increase (P < 0.001) in self-confidence, learner satisfaction, and critical thinking. Overall, they found that simulation problem-based learning was a powerful method for improving learning transfer and applying learned nursing knowledge and should be used to enhance nursing education (Lee & Son, 2021). Utilizing nursing theory in nursing education can better help meet the needs of nursing students and provide a more effective teaching strategy.
Adult Learning Theory
Adult learning, also known as andragogy, gained widespread approval through the educator Malcolm Knowles (Wills & McEwan, 2019). Andragogy is essentially the theory of adult learning. This theory revolves around helping adults learn through an environment of physical comfort, mutual trust, respect, openness, and acceptance of differences (Wills & McEwan, 2019). Through these traits, educators can facilitate effective learning. Learning is not one size fits all; understanding numerous approaches to teaching is imperative for a successful experience. Adult Learning Theory takes this consideration into account, including adults need to be involved in their learning, adults need to have an experience that can be incorporated into learning, adults are interested in learning information relevant to their life or job, adults are self-directed, and learning is problem-centered or motivated by a need (Wills & McEwan, 2019). Bansal et al. (2020) evaluated three different learning methods, including andragogy in medical education. They found that competency-based andragogy was more effective than didactic lecture-based pedagogy for students (Bansal et al., 2020). Anderson et al. (2017) also evaluated andragogy in a flipped classroom setting. They found that the mean scores of the flipped model andragogy exams were higher than those in the lecture model, and significantly more students passed a standardized assessment exam (Anderson et al., 2017).
Applying adult learning theory during lectures can create a more effective learning environment through relevance, compatibility with students’ needs, interactivity, and incorporating previous knowledge. In addition, educators can organize curriculum to include clear objectives and goals stated at the beginning, active learning and participation, group discussions, and debates to understand students’ experiences and apply content to real life. As shown above, these methods can significantly increase learning effectiveness and retention.
