Assignment: Sustainability Initiative Summary

Assignment Content

Select a health care setting and organization on which
you will focus for your sustainability initiative (e.g., local hospital,
veterans’ hospital, ambulance service, urgent care, nursing home).

Analyze the setting and organization you have selected
and break it down to the main departments, employee roles, operating
activities, and so on. While doing so, brainstorm opportunities to reduce costs
or eliminate waste while improving patient care or outcomes.

Review the list of sustainable initiatives from the
list below, and select one that you want to promote for your selected
organization:

Energy efficiency
Lighting
IR scanning
Cogeneration
Kanban Inventory
Device exchange
CR pack reformation
Device reprocessing
Red bag waste reduction
Blue wrap recycling

Note: Ensure that the opportunity you select
correlates with the setting you select. Additionally, if you want to complete a
sustainable initiative that is not on the list, obtain approval from your
instructor before completing the assignment.

Identify data sources you might need to collect and
analyze for your initiative. Consider contacting people in the industry and in
your organization who may be able to help.

Write a 525- to 700-word summary of the sustainability
initiative you want to promote at the health care setting you selected. Your
proposal should:

Create a clear vision or mission statement that
defines the scope of the initiative and would generate buy-in.
Define what outcomes you expect to achieve over time.
Be specific with what you can realistically deliver.

What personal characteristics do males and females in advertisements seem to display?

The Double Standard of Aging in the Media
Before you post, take some time and look at several copies of magazine advertisements and/or online advertisements that include middle-aged adults. [if you can post a picture that is a good representation of what you found, that would be great]
Then, in your initial post, answer the following questions based on what you observed.
(1) What products do older men typically advertise? How about older women?
(2) What personal characteristics do males and females in advertisements seem to display?
(3) Is there evidence of a double standard of aging?

Periods of vocational development
This will take a little extra time, so make sure you plan accordingly. You will need to find a child, an adolescent, and an adult who are willing to be interviewed about their vocational development. The interviews should include the following questions:
For children: “What do you want to be when you grow up, and why?”
For adolescents: “What are your career plans?” “Why have you chosen this particular career path?”
For adults: “What is your present career?” or “What are your career plans?” “Why did you choose this particular career path?” “Do you see yourself changing careers in the future? If so, why?”

What kind of information and material were they given?

Find parents/guardians of a child receiving special education. Ask about their experience and learn as much as possible. Make connections between their personal experience to special education terms and legislation (IDEA) from this module. Some things to ask during the interview:
Background information about the family and child: gender, age, grade, town, siblings, family dynamics, age of referral, disability, and so forth. Please change the name of the parents and child for privacy.
Why and how was the child referred for special education? What kind of meetings did the parents have? How long did it take? What kind of information and material were they given? How much do they know about special education law and their rights?
After the interview, write a paper about that family’s experience. In your paper include:
An introduction of the family and the child
2-3 paragraphs giving a detailed explanation of their experience
Your reflections about their experience. How has IDEA helped the family? How hasn’t it helped the family?
Your paper should be 4-5 paragraphs. Please refer to the rubric for grading guidelines and expectations.

Another option, is to record the interview and submit it in lieu of the paper. Your video interview must include everything that would be in the paper, including your personal reflections about the family’s experience and how IDEA has helped/hasn’t helped the family. If you want to submit a video instead of the paper, please email me to let me know by Friday.

1- The Assignment-

For this assignment, find quotes which resonate with you, share them with us, write on why they had such an effect and then compose an essay (I assign the topic) which was aided by at least one of these quotes.
We learn much in life from watching, analyzing and then trying it ourselves over and over, from tying our shoes to how to speak to how to cook, etc. You all could put me out of work by reading every day, thinking about how you’re reading, how the writer crafted his/her work and then taking the best from this person and that one and synthesizing it into your own writing. I can talk all day about writing, but until you get active, even just being an active reader, it pretty much comes to nothing.

Once you have read through Essay Project #1, you should know what to do here; I not only explain the entire assignment in that link but also give you examples of exactly what I am looking for in your submissions. Six responses are due this week, six next week and six the third week. Each week I will create an Assignment for the six responses. –

1- The Assignment-
Beginning the first week of the semester, we will discuss the authors and books listed below. I share links to the many sites which have excerpted and organized Writers on Writing quotes. We shall read some together, talk about them, write about them, reaction papers, assessment, dual-entry journals and finally, write because of them. Do you have to read a King novel? No, but he is an unqualified success and admired by many for his prolific output and the quality of his prose, and he has kindly shared with anyone interested how he does it. He is a valuable resource, and his help is out there, abundant and often free and inspiring. Ray Bradbury has told my students, “Every morning I jump out of bed and step on a land mine. The land mine is me. After the explosion, I spend the rest of the day putting the pieces back together. Now, it’s your turn. Jump!” King tells them, “the road to hell is paved with adverbs.” Dorothy Parker confesses in our classrooms that “I hate writing but love having written,” and Hemingway concedes that “we are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.” They speak to us, we listen, we talk to another and then we write.
Therefore, let’s focus this week on “writers on writing.” I have provided links to great sites on this subject. Dozens of pieces of advice from the professionals await you there! Please select at least six pieces of advice from among the many offered, discuss in your journal why each impacted you, why you think each is great advice, tell us in a short paragraph how you will make each advice a part of your writing practice and them put one of them into practice in this week’s writing. Submit these in Assignments by the end of each week (Tuesday nights, 11:59) If for any reason you cannot access that website or wish to find more writers on writing quotes, simply Google “writers on writing” and you will find enough sites and examples to be able to do this assignment. Do this every week: finding six pieces of writing advice by the professionals, thinking and then writing about them and sharing your findings with the rest of us. This counts toward the journal requirement for the class; just be ready to separate these pages and keep them in a “Writers On Writing” section of your portfolio.
For the first three weeks of the semester, find and respond to six Writers on Writing entries per week.
