Question
Serial Episode 1: The Breakup
Sarah Koenig
I am going to start this with two quotes from Koenig.
“Information that could mean one thing or perhaps the opposite depending on who’s talking.” “All this information is currency for whatever side you’re on.”
(Koenig, Serial Episode: The Breakup)
These two quotes readily sum up this podcast. The State prosecutors set the motive for the murder of Lee that Syed was humiliated and his pride had taken a hit. They wanted the jury to believe that he could not accept what happened and because of this anger welled up in him. This is what caused Syed to murder Lee. They paint Syed as having been tormented by lying to his family and betraying his religion. Yet according to Syed while he was born and raised Muslim, he was not really in it because of the religion. He mostly thought of himself as doing well and he deserved to have some fun. Syed’s behavior was the same before he began dating Lee and after; dating, smoking weed, going to clubs. The State says Syed was possessive in the relationship but nothing in Lee diary or when Koenig talks to people who knew them suggest a controlling, overbearing relationship between the two. Fast forward through the relationship, which was typical of most teen romances i.e., kiss, fight, breakup then make up, we get to the final break up. Most people Koenig talked to suggest their breakup was typical teen drama though the State prosecutors want to make it seem otherwise. Koenig spoke with the friends that knew both Lee and Syed, which was easy to do. Syed and Lee, including their friends, were all part of a magnet program in the school so they were always with each other. Whether it was Syed’s friends or Lees, both sides state there was little out of the ordinary. Even teachers for Syed would say that while he may have been sad nothing points to Syed being out for murder. The State’s case for motive comes from Jay Wilds who is the only one that says Syed was angry about it and wanted to kill her. How is this person, someone who isn’t that close to Syed, how is their story to be believed over others who were closer in friendship? Was Syed’s defense attorney not able to call these individuals that Koenig spoke with to help refute the States claims? The State’s case is built on a fragile foundation that could have easily crumbled. The motive they have is backed by no evidence. This does not mean Syed did not kill Lee but their reason for it is garbage. The State even tries to suggest that because Syed was an EMT he would have knowledge on how to strangle someone. First off it is not rocket science to strangle someone. Even so, unless I missed the day where they taught us how to strangle people, as a registered EMT I am going to have to call BS. I do not understand how Syed’s defense attorney, Gutierrez, was unable to build doubt in the claims made by the State. It really does seem intentional. If this were a football game, Gutierrez would be looked at for point-shaving or at the very least throwing the game. How could a jury believe this was enough to convict someone when there was just as much information to suggest otherwise?

Marxist Analysis about work and leisure in Fahrenheit

Make sure that you understand the Marx’s ideas about work and class struggle as explained in the course materials. For this assignment, you should apply one of the following Marxist terms to Fahrenheit 451.

alienation
commodity fetishism
proletariate v bourgeosie

Your essay must include the following elements:

– A short introduction that ends with a one-sentence statement of the theme (thesis statement). This statement of the theme needs to connect a Marxist concept to Fahrenheit 451

– Body paragraphs that begin with a claim, followed by evidence and analysis.

– A brief conclusion that follows the format on pages 52-3 of A Method for Writing Essays about Literature.

– A “Works Cited” list of resources.

Talk about Sustainable development goals 14-Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

For this project, students will be assigned to groups of 3. In your group each member must choose a different Sustainable Development Goal. Group assignments and information about the SDGs will be provided in class on January
19th.
As an individual you will then research the goal you have chosen, including
details about what it is, why it matters, and how current business leaders are
tackling the goal. You will take turns presenting this information to your group
members in a 4–5-minute formal presentation.

Evaluating Inherited Diseases (Human Biology)

Evaluating Inherited Diseases

This two-part assignment will allow you to evaluate the role genes play in the development of certain diseases. Additionally, you will demonstrate your ability to use electronic databases for research purposes.

First, you will select a genetic disease. You may take this opportunity to think about your individual health and health risks and consider any genetic diseases prevalent in your family. Do you have a predisposition to breast cancer, diabetes, hypertension or any other disease? You may consider your own health risks or those of other individuals such as a family member or friend. Then, in a paper of 750–1,000 words, address the following:

Part I: Evaluating the Role of Genes in the Development of Disease

Provide an introduction of the disease, including the reason why this would be considered a genetic/inherited disease.
Discuss the major signs/symptoms of the disorder.
Research the mode of inheritance for your chosen disease and provide a thorough discussion of the mode of inheritance. Your discussion should focus on how the disease is passed on from parent to offspring.
Are there specific genes that have been identified in the development of this disease? If so, what are they?
Discuss any available treatments used for the disease or to manage its symptoms.
Address any lifestyle changes or preventative efforts that may reduce the development of the disease or may help to manage the symptoms of the disease.
If a family member is diagnosed with this disease or is identified as a carrier of the gene that causes the disease, what steps could they take to reduce the likelihood that their children may inherit the disease?

Investigation into Immune or Infectious Diseases

Investigation into Immune or Infectious Diseases

In your reading this week, you have learned about the body’s defense mechanisms, problems of the immune system and various infectious diseases. In this assignment, you will discuss an example of a pathogen, a disease causing-organism. You will explore how the pathogen causes harm, how it is transmitted from person to person, how it is studied so that steps can be taken to hold it in check. Additionally, you will explore the mechanisms your body has in place to protect you from infectious diseases and cancer.

You have been invited by your local community health department to give a PowerPoint presentation on a disease-causing organism. Your goal is to educate your audience about the pathogen, the disease it causes, means for early detection, and preventative measures. The meeting will take place at the health department during a community health fair. Be mindful that your target audience will be composed of people from the local community who most likely will not have a background in science or medicine.

Your assignment will be to pick one pathogen that affects humans. You should not select SARS-CoV-2. In your presentation, you should discuss each of the following:

Identify the selected pathogen. Note that this slide should introduce the pathogen or causative agent not the disease it causes.
Describe to the audience the major characteristics of this pathogen. Your description should identify whether the pathogen is a bacteria, virus, protozoan, fungus, parasitic worm, or prion.
Describe how this pathogen infects the host.
Identify the life-cycle, source, or reservoir for this pathogen.
Address the mode of transmission for the pathogen (how the pathogen spreads).
Identify the specific cells, organs, or organ systems affected by this pathogen.
Include pictures and/or illustrations of the pathogen, its life cycle or mode of transmission.
Discuss the disease(s) caused by this pathogen. Ensure that you describe the major signs and symptoms of the disease.
Describe any risk factors related to the disease (e.g., age, sex, personal habits, geographic location, or any factors shared by people with symptoms of the condition).
Describe how the disease is detected and diagnosed.
Describe how the disease is treated.
Identify any preventative measures that can be taken to reduce spread of the disease.
What mechanisms does our body have in place to protect us from pathogens and prevent the development of cancer? Provide a thorough description of these mechanisms.
Provide a summary of the most interesting fact you learned from researching this pathogen.
Include speaker notes for each slide. The speaker notes should provide a thorough explanation of the information presented in each slide. The speaker notes should be a “script” of what you will say to your audience. Each slide should have a picture and/or bullet points. Your notes should be located in the notes section below the slide, with the specific talking points you will deliver to the audience.
Include a reference slide with references listed in APA format.
Your PowerPoint presentation should be written with your audience in mind. Remember, your audience does not have a science or medical background, so you will need to translate any “jargon” into something that they will understand.

The presentation should be between 10–15 slides, not including the title and references slides.

Creating an Effective PowerPoint Presentation

An effective PowerPoint presentation will include:

Have approximately 10–15 slides,
An introduction (1–2 slides): bulleted list of background and key points,
A body: multiple slides (10–11 slides), each with one key point,
A conclusion (1 slide): bulleted list of major points,
A reference slide in APA,
Include in-text citations (in APA) where applicable,
Use images (with citations),
Ensure that slides are brief and bulleted, and
Include speaker notes below each respective slide, outlining exactly what you would say to an audience as you presented it.

What variables will be in your study? What type of variable are they (ordinal, nominal, discrete, continuous, etc)?

Assignment Mini- Study Part I
In this course you will conduct a mini study. You will
survey 50 people through any method you choose to find out information on your
topic. You will then calculate the statistics for your data. It is important to
remember your mini study should use quantitative values since this is a
statistics course so you can complete the required calculations. When you pick
a topic, make sure it is something people are comfortable answering and that
you only use adults. Complete this worksheet and then begin your survey once it
is graded so that you can write up your results in Module 7.
