Let’s use the DB this week to help us narrow down possible topics for your final essay in this class, the research essay. Our text identifies two types of inquiry question that motivate a research essay: “What does the evidence suggest is true? What is the relationship?”

Please review all the material in the “Opening Up” section of this chapter, on pages 357-359. Be sure to look over the “Inquiry Project: Writing a Research Essay,” on page 356, too, for details about what to do in writing your research essay. Note in particular the advice offered there that, when trying to find a topic to write about for your research essay, you should “avoid things you already have a strong opinion about.”
Let’s use the DB this week to help us narrow down possible topics for your final essay in this class, the research essay. Our text identifies two types of inquiry question that motivate a research essay: “What does the evidence suggest is true? What is the relationship?”
Please post in the DB to share, first of all, inquiry questions of the first type that you are truly interested in having someone provide an answer to. Please state your questions in this or a similar format: “What does the evidence suggest is really true about X?“ Pose at least five or six of this type of question.
Post in the DB a second time to share inquiry questions of the second type that you are truly interested in having someone provide an answer to. Please state your questions in this or a similar format: “What is the relationship between X and Y?” or “Does/will X cause Y?” or “What might happen if we do/don’t do X?” Pose at least five or six of this type of question.
Use your remaining posts this week to respond to what others have posted. Offer new questions that were suggested to you by what you’ve read. Consider which questions seem to definitely have potential and explain why. Consider as well which questions will probably not work. Are any questions not truly “researchable”? Does it seem most people already have strong opinions about some questions?

Analyze the value of what you have learned in this class and connect it with your future educational or career goals. Reflect on what topic, assignment or nation/state left an impact on you and why? It could be positive or negative. Identify one thing that you learned this semester that you feel could have an effect on your community? And, in conclusion, what did you enjoy about the class and what would you like to see changed to make the class better?

In this course, you learned about international politics and how it effects your daily lives. We have learned new terminology, new theories and new ways to evaluate and analysis international and domestic policies. When political and economic events are occurring in the United States or other nation/states, we have a better understanding of what the impact could be internationally. We discussed the significance of knowing more than one story of what is going on and being aware of who is telling the story. In the class project you were given the opportunity to research world challenges and share those findings and solutions with each other.
The skills and knowledge that we learn in each of our courses can be beneficial to our everyday life if we reflect on what have learned.
Part Two of the Final Exam will be in essay format, 300-400 words in APA format. Please upload your essay on to canvas. It is due on Saturday, February 5 before 11:59 pm.
Write a reflection that responds to these prompts:
Take some time to go back to the first day of class and consider where you were at the start of this class – what you knew about Contemporary World Affairs, and what you thought. Explain what you have learned about Contemporary World Affairs. Define international politics. Give details on your thinking or the learning processes, as you revisit the significance of the stories you know about the world. Do you need to make changes to your perceptions or stories of the many nation/states, if so, how?
How does international relationships and globalization affect the world? What are the major challenges? How has the role of colonization transformed the nation/states into international actors? How would you analyze the impact of the important political events that are occurring in our world today, such as terrorism, threat of war, disasters, arms control, change in leadership, domestic crisis, threat to democracy, the threat of democracy, economic crisis, pandemic, human rights or the economic growth of the Asian Tigers, etc.? Why is it important to know who the major actors are – leaders, media, interest groups, governments, public opinion, foreign policies, international policies, transnational corporations, international nongovernmental organizations, international organizations? How important is the economic structuralist, constructivist, and feminine approaches to making policy changes?

Sources should be less than 10 years old and if using statistical data, it should be less than 5 years old. Do not forget to use in text citations to credit your sources.
Note that references used for your research need to be peer-reviewed/scholarly journals. These journals typically have the following characteristics:

1. articles are reviewed by a panel of experts before they are accepted for publication;
2. articles are written by a scholar or specialist in the field;
3. articles report on original research or experimentation;
4. are often published by professional associations;
5. utilize terminology associated with the discipline.

Use of newspapers, news magazines, and similar periodicals must be kept to a minimum, and will be acceptable only as sources for supplementary information.

References like “Wikipedia,” “Psychology Today,” and “Court TV” are not primary sources, are not peer reviewed (reviewed for empirical integrity, accuracy, and authenticity), and are not appropriate references for scholarly writing (with the possible exception of use for anecdotal background information).

Frameworks for Effective Homeland Security

Strategic planning, in its generic form, is an essential tool for any homeland security agency to be successful. While homeland security-specific strategic planning will be explored in future segments of this course, it is important to develop a solid understanding of the underlying principles of effective strategic planning processes that public entities faced with a highly dynamic operating environment employ to be successful.
In homeland security, a poorly designed and executed strategic plan will, at a minimum, waste critical resources and time. At worse, a poorly designed and executed homeland security strategic plan may leave the nation, a state, or a community unnecessarily vulnerable to a threat that may pose a catastrophic risk. With so much at stake, homeland security organizations must develop and execute sound strategic plans.
Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas:
What are the phases of a typical strategic plan?
How do they differ between goals-based, issues-based, and organic approaches to strategic planning?
Which approach do you think would work best for a homeland security organization?
The strategic planning process can bring on organizational change that can sometimes be met with resistance.
What strategies do you think can be employed to minimize resistance to change? Explain.
No matter what strategic planning process an organization chooses to follow, trade-offs and negotiations are important aspects.
What are one or more successful strategies that you feel can be utilized to move the planning process forward? Explain.
How can a homeland security organization’s strategic planning process be used to develop future goals and objectives? Explain.
State A’s Department of Homeland Security has included the following statement within its strategic plan:
By December 31st, the logistics division will realign its distribution system to better serve community within the state.
Is this statement an example of a strategic goal? Why or why not? Explain.

Address whether formulating rules of behavior helps people live moral lives.
Explain how abiding by absolute moral rules might present moral conflict in practice.
Describe the connection between the selected theory and the emotion and intuition in Kant’s thinking.
Explain how respect for others is a crucial aspect of deontological theories, and how that compares or relates to the theory you selected.

business issue addressed by consumer

You will be tasked with locating a recent article from the business world. The article must be from a news outlet such as NBC, CBS, Fox News, NPR, ABC, BBC, Al Jazeera etc. Articles from magazines will be too dated, articles from organizations (SHRM for example) are not appropriate. When in doubt, ask!
In the article you should find a business issue that was addressed in some way by the company/consumers etc. That issue is what you will be addressing in your review. What would you have done differently and why? Substantiate your response from theories/definitions/content from the text and relevant outside sources to rationalize your decision. You should also be prepared to present your article to the class and/or lead a discussion about the business’ response and defend your response as being more appropriate than one the business utilized.
Your review should include the following:
1-2 paragraph overview of the article, the issue and ramifications currently internally (to the company) or externally (economic environment)
1 paragraph detailing the business issue you identified in the article, identification and definition of the issue from the text, and how that issue was derived from the article you read
1-2 paragraphs hypothesizing how making a different business decision would have lead to more favorable outcomes for the company/environment. Identification and definition (from the text) of the theory/process/practice you would have employed en lieu of the decision made by the business.
The article reviews should be approximately 2 pages in length, double spaced, MLA or APA format. This does not mean once you hit the first line of the 2nd page that you have met the length requirements. If your writing does not got to at least ½ way through the second page, you have not covered the issue/response thoroughly enough.
Grade will be derived from the use of an appropriate resource, length requirement being met and the appropriate use of terms/definitions/theories in both identification of current situations and hypothetical ones proposed based off different decision making.

National Homeland Security Policy Objectives and National Strategy

As you have learned in Weeks 1 and 2, today’s homeland security strategic planning is occurring in an extremely dynamic environment. While Week 1 presented the basics and concepts of strategic planning, Week 2 surveyed the history of homeland security strategic planning in the U.S. and then focused on the numerous federal homeland security (and emergency management) strategic plans that have been produced. You learned that there are similarities and incongruities between the various federal plans in such areas as timeliness of the plan revision, the transparency of the plan development process, and the strategic planning methodology used to develop the plan.
Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas:
In what ways is the environment in which current federal homeland security strategic planning is occurring dynamic?
Briefly review the 2002 and 2007 versions of the National Strategy for Homeland Security (NSHS).
Do you think the 2007 version is an improvement upon the previous versions? Explain your answer.
Briefly review each of the following plans:
National Security Strategy 2010
National Strategy for Combating Terrorism 2006
DHS Strategic Plan 2012-2016
The Quadrennial Homeland Security Review 2010
Which planning model, (i.e., issue-based, goals-based, or organic) do you think best applies to each one, and why? (Note: Mixed-method models are acceptable.)
Do you think that the Strategic Planning Cycle or the Strategic Planning Process Map methodologies is the best fit for federal homeland security strategic planning? Explain your response.
