Choose at least two poems to help you think and write about home. Vivid writing requires some specific images, sights, sounds, smells, or dialogue. Notice how specific these poems are? Be specific when you write about them.
Read the questions below. These questions are meant to help you write about the poems. There are a multitude of ways to write about a subject and each question below will not apply to all the poems.
Do not waste time being frustrated by a question; move on to the next question and see if it helps you understand any of the poems.
Do not pick a poem that does not speak to you. By the way, do not shy away from a poem that is long. The easiest and most charming poem in this group is the longest one.
Here are questions to help you frame this short interactive essay (a discussion post). If you do not find one that helps you to understand your poem, the create your own questions (they should have some depth) and answer them. Good questions can help lead you to a topic for your interactive essay.
What is home within your chosen poem or poems? People? Places? Things? Feelings? Something else?
If your poem is written by someone from another country or culture, how does that affect your understanding of the idea of home as a universal human longing?
These writers (along with moviemakers, artists, and musicians) depict home ( or whatever subject) in different ways. Do any of these poems show the value of home in an unusual way — by its absence or by the longing for home or by something else? Or what about a series of events that show the atmosphere of the home without ever saying anything directly about home? This can be a very powerful way of telling a story.
What is the relationship of location or place or architecture to our idea of home? Do any of these poems depict the effect of location, place or architecture on the speaker’s idea of home?
These questions are to help you come up with ideas to write about, but your post is not to be simply question and answer.
Use the ideas discussed in Let’s Talk About Writing to help you organize around your ideas from the poems and your own ideas about home. Create a thesis statement which should appear near the end of your first paragraph. Note: It is easier to write a great intro after you have finished the rest of your paper – or at least after you have a good thesis statement
Then write a substantive response to two classmates’ posts. Substantive means a genuine response that shows attention and thought about the content of your peer’s post. “Great job!” or “Yea, me too.” is not substantive though it may be kind and encouraging. I consider your discussion post and responses to be an interactive essay, and I will grade it as such.
If you quote from your poem, be sure you quote no more than a line or two at the time. Mention the poet’s last name in the sentence introducing your quotation. Makes sure you know the poet’s last name and use that name or first and last names together to refer to the poet. Do not refer to your poet solely by his or her first name (-10 points).
This post will be the springboard for your first formal paper. This discussion post will count as part of your composition grade which means that it is significant. Composition makes up 70% of your grade.
Your post should be 500 words basically correct in grammar and punctuation, and your own work (not copied from an internet site). Your two responses to classmates (you may certainly write more than two but you will be graded on two) should be 25-50 words.
Use what you know about writing an essay to craft a good essay for this Discussion post. If you need help or a review as you write, be sure to consult your text. The table of contents is linked to the appropriate sections in the book. For example, if you struggle with writing paragraphs go to this link Introduction to Writing Paragraphs.
You must start a thread by posting your discussion before you can see the posts of others. If you are the first one to post, you will have to wait until others post to make your responses — obviously. Do NOT post a word or two, so that you can view others’ posts and then come back with one of your own. That is an automatic F.
A good job on this discussion will help you with your first formal essay, because we will be looking at these same poems plus stories.
You must start a thread before you can read and reply to other threads

Assignment Directions
Read the scenario, part 1, part 2, and the rubric before beginning your assignment.
Scenario
Pastas R Us, Inc. is a fast-casual restaurant chain specializing in noodle-based dishes, soups, and salads. Since its inception, the business development team has favored opening new restaurants in areas (within a 3-mile radius) that satisfy the following demographic conditions:
• Median age between 25 and 45 years old
• At least 15% college-educated adult population
Last year, the marketing department rolled out a loyalty card strategy to increase sales. Under this program, customers present their loyalty card when paying for their orders and receive some free food after making 10 purchases.
The company has collected data from its 74 restaurants to track important variables such as average sales per customer, year-on-year sales growth, sales per sq. ft., loyalty card usage as a percentage of sales, and others. A key metric of financial performance in the restaurant industry is annual sales per sq. ft. For example, if a 1,200 sq. ft. restaurant recorded $2 million in sales last year, then it sold $1,667 per sq. ft.
Executive management wants to know whether the current expansion criteria can be improved; evaluate the effectiveness of the loyalty card marketing strategy; and identify feasible, actionable opportunities for improvement. As a member of the analytics department, you’ve been assigned the responsibility of conducting a thorough statistical analysis of the company’s available database to answer executive management’s questions.
Part 1: Descriptive Statistics Analysis
Conduct the following descriptive statistics analyses using the Pastas R Us, Inc. data set in Microsoft Excel. Answer the questions in the spreadsheet or a separate Microsoft Word document.
Insert a new column in the database that corresponds to AnnualSales. AnnualSales is the result of multiplying a restaurant’s SqFt by Sales/SqFt.
Calculate the following:

• mean
• standard deviation
• skew
• 5-number summary
• interquartile range (IQR) for each of the variables
Create a box-plot for the AnnualSales variable and answer the following questions:
• Does it look symmetric?
• Would you prefer the IQR instead of the standard deviation to describe this variable’s dispersion? Why or why not?
Create a histogram for the Sales/SqFt variable and answer the following questions:
• Is the distribution symmetric? If not, what is the skew?
• Are there any outliers? If so, which one(s)?
• What is the SqFt area of the outlier(s)? Is the outlier(s) smaller or larger than the average restaurant in the database? What can you conclude from this
observation?
• What measure of central tendency is more appropriate to describe Sales/SqFt? Why?

Part 2: Report
Write a 750- to 1,000-word statistical report with the following sections:
• Section 1: Scope and Descriptive Statistics
• Section 2: Analysis
• Section 3: Recommendations and Implementation
Section 1: Scope and Descriptive Statistics
• State the report’s objective.
• Discuss the nature of the current database. What variables were analyzed?
• Summarize your descriptive statistics findings from Part 1. Use a table and insert appropriate graphs.
Section 2: Analysis
• Using Microsoft Excel, create scatter plots and display the regression equations for the following pairs of variables:
o BachDeg% versus Sales/SqFt
o MedIncome versus Sales/SqFt
o MedAge versus Sales/SqFt
o LoyaltyCard(%) versus SalesGrowth(%)
• In your report, include the scatter plots. For each scatter plot, designate the type of relationship observed (increasing/positive, decreasing/negative, or no
relationship) and determine what can be concluded from these relationships.

Section 3: Recommendations and Implementation
• Based on your findings above, assess which expansion criteria seem to be more effective. Is there any expansion criterion that could be changed or eliminated? If so, which one and why?
• Based on your findings above, does it appear as if the loyalty card is positively correlated with sales growth? Would you recommend changing this marketing strategy?
• Based on your previous findings, recommend marketing positioning that targets a specific demographic. (Hint: Are younger people patronizing the restaurants more than older people?)
• Indicate what information should be collected to track and evaluate the effectiveness of your recommendations. How can this data be collected? (Hint: would you use survey/samples or census data?)

Hello, Class
Since we were born, we have been faced with decisions every day. These decisions are based on our motivations and emotions. We often solve our decisions via trial and error (Myers & DeWall, 2019). We also may use algorithms and heuristics to enhance our ability to solve various scenarios (Myers & DeWall, 2019). An algorithm is a step-by-step guide with a solidified solution, while a heuristic simplifies a way of thinking (Myers & DeWall, 2019). Often we can hinder our way of thinking by being stuck in a mental set or a way to approach an issue in the same manner as what worked before (Myers & DeWall, 2019). Regardless of what method we take in our decision-making process, the four steps still get used.
Personal Narrative
Until a few months ago, I always had intentions of going to school in North Carolina and residing there for the time to come. I had a six-figure job and plenty of support systems, so leaving was not even a thought in my mind. One day I woke up and decided to take school seriously as I lost sight of what I wanted to do by working so much. I have always wanted to be a nurse, and that opportunity was slipping away as I sunk more and more of my time into work. When I woke up and decided I wanted to take school seriously, I was presented with essentially two options. Stay in North Carolina and continue with my current lifestyle and stable job or leave everything I know, so no distractions and focus on school. Both of these options had many pros and cons that came along with them. If I stay in North Carolina, the pros would be that I had a well-paying job doing something that I enjoy doing, plenty of friends and family, and a familiar setting that I am used to.
On the contrary, the cons would be taking a massive pay cut, moving to a place where I have never been, and being there without anyone I know and no support systems.
Conclusion
After reading this week’s chapter, we now see that decision-making does not end after a decision has been made, nor does it have to be made with a lack of emotion (Myers & DeWall, 2019). I did not have an overconfidence attitude in this situation. If anything, I was the opposite. Being able to engage my feelings and intellect, I made a decision and responded to the cons of that decision accordingly.
Question
Why do we often get lost in the decision-making process when listing pros and cons? Why is it easier to make a decision based on cons?

What is the preliminary bibliography?
Objective: The ten-source preliminary bibliography (or working bibliography) demonstrates your ability to locate a variety of reliable sources on a research topic while following MLA guidelines for documentation and format.
Grading: The paper will be worth 100 points and serve as 5% of your overall grade. This rubric will be used to grade the paper: Preliminary Bibliography Grading Rubric Download Preliminary Bibliography Grading Rubric
Preparation: In addition to in-class and online resources, prepare by reading:
Steps to Writing Well, Chapter 19, pp. 410-13, and Chapter 20, pp. 431-37.
Also, read Harbrace Essentials, pp. 90-91.
Paper Length: 1-1 ½ typed pages–containing ten source citations
Documentation/Style: Follow MLA guidelines for formatting your document and for creating source citations.
Title: The title represents the type of document and your research topic, for example: “Preliminary Bibliography: Oil Pipelines.”
Submission Requirements: Your paper is due on Canvas by midnight of the due date. Note that whatever you submit will be graded; therefore, double-check your submission.
Late work policy: Students may submit work up to one week after the due date. However, ten points will be deducted from your assignment grade for each day the work is late. Students with documented medical or emergency absences will be allowed to make up work within the timeframe established by the instructor and administration.
STEP 1: Read: What is the preliminary bibliography? First, it is sometimes called a working bibliography. “Bibliography” actually means a list of books, but the list includes whatever types of sources you might use in your paper–newspapers, journals, lectures, correspondence, interviews, charts, graphs, etc. Preliminary or working implies that the list is not final because research is a work in progress. For your bibliography, do not list every source that you have come across during research, you only list the TEN SOURCES that have the most potential for use in your paper.
That means, for an argument paper, the source may contain information about how the topic became controversial, or it may provide the differences in people’s opinions on your topic. A more reliable article may show both sides of an argument–without favoring one side over the other (bias/prejudice). You want to collect authoritative, credible support that contains facts that can be verified. This may be in the form of statistics, quotes, research findings, polls conducted, etc. Reminder: Your TRAAP evaluation improves your skills for locating sources that are Timely, Relevant, Authoritative, Accurate, and Purposeful.
A preliminary bibliography can also help you examine the breadth and depth of the research you’ve done. When you assemble all of the resources you’ve consulted into a bibliography, you are better able to answer some important questions about the scope of your research: Are there areas of your research question that you haven’t fully explored yet? Are there certain kinds of sources that you haven’t consulted that might hold new or different information about that question? Have you consulted enough recent sources on the question to provide accurate information?
For organizational purposes, the list of source citations in the bibliography are ALWAYS alphabetized (ABC order).
“Citing the source” or “making a source citation” means including information that is necessary for locating the source. The source information must be in the correct order (author, title, containers, volume and issue numbers, date, URL, etc.).
Using the author’s last name, organize the sources in alphabetical (ABC) order. If there is no author, use the first important word of the title of the article (not a, an, and the) to alphabetize the source.
For future reference: You will build your annotated bibliography from sources in this preliminary bibliography. Also, the “Works Cited” page of your research paper contains the final sources that you actually use in your paper.
STEP 2: With respect to instructor guidelines, follow this list of steps to format your document and create citations. Download With respect to instructor guidelines, follow this list of steps to format your document and create citations.
STEP 3: Submit your work.
