Development of Civilization to 1648
Spring 2022

1. Much of human history took place before the development of civilization, much less writing. This means historians are dependent upon other disciplines ( archeology, anthropology, DNA analysis) for our information about these earliest times. What they teach us is that humans were first hunter/gathers and then they became village dwellers who were farmers. Describe both of these two ways of life in terms of their extent and their character. In this context, where would you place Abraham who was a herder? ( Hint: coming up with a thesis for this one is hard. Perhaps it would work to say something like “ Before humans developed civilization they were either hunter/gathers or farmers who lived in villages. These ways of life can be found all over the globe.” This makes a claim so it is a thesis (which also means it could be mistaken) and it suggests how you organize your answer which makes it a good one.

2. The earliest civilization we studied was Sumer in what is today Iraq. The geography of the area played an important role in shaping civilizations there. In particular what feature of the geography did we stress and how did it shape the political and cultural, even religious history of this area? (Don’t forget taming of the rivers and wide open to attack.) Can you see that for this question the influence of geography on the emergence of the form of the civilization makes sense as your thesis?

3. The earliest civilization in Egypt is a bit younger than that of Mesopotamia but no less important. You have read several sources which suggest just how advanced that civilization was. Don’t forget to include them. Also, remember geography plays an important role in the shaping of the history of Egypt. Don’t forget taming the rivers and isolated from attack. It might even make a good thesis.

4. The Hittites were a powerful force in history for almost half a millennium. After their collapse, near the end of the Bronze Age, they disappear completely from history until the eighteenth century. Given that they were lost for so long, how do we know they were really a civilization worth writing about? ( This really 2 questions and therefore 2 tasks. First, prove that it qualifies by our definition of a civilization and second, what makes it worth writing about?

5. Describe Bronze Age Indian Civilization.
6. Tannahill has discussed clean and unclean food in two places, thus far, 56f and 103 f. Why people make certain foods “unclean”, that is unfit for human consumption, has little to do with whether or not we can safely eat them. Poison ivy or death cap mushrooms are not “unclean”. Some people eat dogs, we will not do so. In Ecuador, the national dish is guinea pig. Why we declare some things taboo and others acceptable is what I want you to discuss. What information on this subject does Tannahill provide? What explanations does he offer and which among them does he accept? What makes the most sense to you?

Describe and evaluate a conflict situation in a business environment of a private company, e.g. between a line manager and a team member about (perceived) underperformance.

Assessment 2: REPORT
Weighting: 50%
Date and method of submission: week 16, January 27 , 2021, by midnight, submission via NEO upload.
Word count or equivalent: 1500 words (+/-10%)
Assessment 2: Report (50%).
Beginning in week 7 (TBC), students will begin to put together a report in which they describe, analyse and resolve a conflict situation that one of their family members/someone they know was facing previously in a work-related situation of either a public or private organisation. This report is due in week 16.
Students will first provide a description of the relevant facts and decisive aspects of the conflict situation, including an analysis of interests of all involved parties. Then they will identify and evaluate the solution that was decided and implemented at the time to resolve the conflict situation. In a final step, students will then provide their own suggestion on how — based on literature and their learnings from the module — they would address and resolve that same situation.
Examples:
Describe and evaluate a conflict situation in a business environment of a private
company, e.g. between a line manager and a team member about (perceived) underperformance.
Describe and evaluate a conflict situation in a public institution, e.g. on the topic of (perceived) non-compliance with public policies.
Describe and evaluate a conflict situation in a marketing environment, e.g. between an advertising agency and a dissatisfied client on the topic of (perceived) non-achievement of targeted sales as a consequence of an advertising campaign.
ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES
th
Further detail on expected content of report
1. Factual description of the situation and of the interests, needs and motivations of the involved parties, based on the results of your investigation:
a) What happened? Provide a description of the situational facts and observable, binarybehaviours(please note: not your judgment or interpretation of their behaviour!) of the people involved in order to describe what happened before and during the conflict.
b) Why did it happen?
c) What motivated person / group A to behave this way? Describe the open and hidden reasons for their behaviour, for example (but not limited to): their wants, interests, needs, values, expectations (visible / invisible), motivations (intrinsic? extrinsic?), personality drivers, particular innate talents, causal attributions, internal / external locus of control, cognitive biases, cultural biases, stress triggers, etc.
d) What motivated person / group B to behave this way? Describe the open and hidden reasons for their behaviour, for example (but not limited to) their wants, interests, needs, values, expectations (visible / invisible), motivations (intrinsic? extrinsic?), personality drivers, particular innate talents, causal attributions, internal / external locus of control, cognitive biases, cultural biases, stress triggers, etc.
(For multi-party conflicts – continue with the same analysis: What motivated person / group C to behave this way? etc.)
2. Factual description of the solution that was put in place at the time: Which solution was put in place at the time? Who put it in place? Which consequences in the behaviour of the involved parties did the solution lead to?
3. Your evaluation of the effectiveness of the solution that was put in place. Do you agree that this solution was the best one to resolve this conflict? Why or why not? Use the theories, concepts and tools discussed in class as well as a maximum of 5 sources of relevant academic literature in order to argue your point of view.

The Response Essays must use APA or ASA formatting for in-text citations and reference list and be free of spelling and grammatical errors. The assignment should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font. Furthermore, the assignment should be between 2-3 pages in length, with one-inch margins on all sides and page numbers. Please do not vary your font, font size, spacing, or punctuation in an effort to overcome the length requirement, as this is readily apparent to your instructor. Write with purpose. Each sentence should contribute to your overall writing (no fillers like very very very very interesting). Additionally, you should use the same glossary of terms that the readings’ authors use; do not make up your own descriptors or tell the reader “Basically…” Your tone should be literal and formal using proper English spelling and grammar. Do not use clichés, text speak (e.g. ROFL), emoji, non-text characters, or non-scholarly sources. You should write in paragraphs which are organized to fit together. You will need at least two sources (one can be your textbook).
Response Essay #1
Choose a movie or TV show you think highlights a deviant occupation. It needs to be something you’e seen. Don’t use documentaries or reality TV. The premise needs to be fictional. Give a brief description of the movie/show and what deviant occupation it highlights. You will want to highlight any stigmas addressed, the tone of the film/show, and how the occupation is viewed by the other characters. Tell of any missing stigmas. Discuss how realistic/non realistic the film/show’s approach to the deviant occupation is. Compare how the film/show presents the occupation to what sociologists/academic journals say.
For example: If you chose Six Feet Under, you would describe the show, tell how they portray funeral homes/directors. List any stigmas the show addresses. Describe the show versus the reality of funeral directors. Tell of any real life stigmas that are not portrayed in the show. Describe what your sources say about funeral directors.
