Gender activism project and paper

PAY ATTENTION TO THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AND FOLLOW THEM THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT PROJECT

YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE A DIGITAL ACTIVISIM CAMPAIGN THROUGH A BLOG AND GIVE ME ACCESS TO IT AND WRITE A PAPER ABOUT IT.

There are many types of activism, from organizational involvement to participating in a social movement to engaging in digital activism. In this class, you will engage in an activism project focused on gender issues and reflect on your experience.

Create a digital activism campaign. As outlined on this webpage, digital activism can be carried out through a variety of tools (blogs, micro-blogs, SMS, websites, social media, social networks, video, Tiktok, etc.). Digital technology can do six things for activists: shape public opinion and create new collective identities, plan an action, protect activists (because of anonymity), share a call to action, take action digitally (e.g. creating or signing an e-petition), and transfer resources (including raising money). For this option, you will create a gender-related digital activism campaign of your own choosing.
Writing it Up:
After you have engaged in activism, then write a paper describing your project and how it relates to the course materials. You will not be graded on the project you select. You will be graded on your essay and the extent to which you can link it to the issues we have discussed in class.

As you can see from the attached rubric, you will need to exhibit a demonstrated understanding of gender inequality concepts and terms as used in the course material. This means that in addition to summarizing what you did, you also need to link it to the course material. Make sure you are as specific as possible, referencing and quoting relevant course material. That is, you will analyze your actions and experiences in light of our course readings and lectures to highlight how it connects to course concepts. The focus of your paper should be your interpretations and analysis of how what you did relates to our course material. That is, in the course of writing up your interpretations, try to do more than simply describing it—explain it, analyze it, make sense of it analytically. It is important that you provide specific references to the course material for the points you want to make. In other words, back up your interpretations and assertions.
Paper Format: (please label as Part A and Part B)
Title Page: Include your name and an engaging title. (This does not count in your 3 pages) Please include a selfie of yourself engaging in the activity on the title page.
Part A: Describe the Activity (approximately 1 page, double spaced)
• What did you DO and why is it important? You can include why you chose the activity. You may use the first person (“I”) in your paper.
Part B: Explain how the Activity Addresses Gender Inequality (approximately 1 page, double spaced)
• Drawing explicitly on the course material, analyze the problem that you addressed in light of the course materials (lectures, readings, etc.).
• Be as specific as possible. Make direct links to the course materials, citing those that are relevant.
• Conclude your paper with a statement of how you could expand or continue your activity in the future.

What is Natasha Trethewey expressing about race and identity in her poem “White Lies”? How does she use diction, imagery, or symbolism to express the persona’s complex feelings?

For this assignment, you will need to select a poem from your textbook and write an analysis of the work in which you discuss not just what you feel the poem is about, but also which poetic devices the poet used and to what end. Make sure to go into as much detail as possible about what types of devices are used and how. An analysis is not a summary or restatement of what is going on in a piece of work—it is a thoughtful breakdown of the work which results in insights that go below the surface of a one-time reading and far beyond just “who, what, where” types of statements.
Remember: Even though this is a short analysis, you must still make sure to follow the fundamentals rules of composition. For example, your paper must include an introduction (with engaging pull in and focused thesis statement), a body (with textual support), and a conclusion (with signal that you are concluding and something to think about).
Your essay should be at least 750 words long and should be double-spaced. Your essay should have a title, a hook or pull in to start the introduction, and a clear thesis statement with a claim and point of support. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that is a claim about the poem that is related to your thesis statement. You should use carefully selected words, phrases, images, figures of speech, etc. as evidence to support your claims. All evidence should be supported by explanation and argument as well. Quoted material should be placed in quotation marks and followed by the line number or numbers in parentheses. Your paper should also contain a conclusion and a Works Cited page. You might also check out the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University for help in writing about poetry (type OWL and Purdue into Google and, if prompted, choose the link that says “Non Purdue instructors and students). Finally, check out the numerous examples of student essays in your anthology. Good luck!

Research a Conspiracy Theory

Choose one conspiracy theory or “fake news” story you have heard about or want to research.
Step 1: Thinking
First, find information on that theory online. You can use any sources that seem appropriate (even forums where people may be spreading fake news or conspiracy theories).
When did the theory/story start circulating?
Where does it show up first?
Whom does it seem to benefit?
What happens as a result of this story?
Why does it take off?
Does it disappear? If so, why?
Are you convinced by it? Why?
Does it stand up to the scientific method?
Step 2: Searching
Second, go to the RIC Library Databases like JSTOR and MLA or HELIN (books) and find at least one relevant scholarly, academic source (peer-reviewed, published book or article).
What does this scholarly article or book teach you about the theory or story?
The source does not have to be exactly on your particular topic, but it can be about stories, rumors, politics, elections, history, science, vaccines, or anything related to your theory or story.
Step 3: Decide what you think about what you learned.
Where do you stand on these kinds of stories/theories?
How do you explain their existence?
Why do you think people believe in them or spread them?
How does one challenge them?
Are you convinced by the theory? Why? Is there enough proof?
Your answers to these kinds of questions will be your argument or thesis.
Step 4: Drafting
Make sure your thesis is clear in your introduction.
Have an intriguing title for your paper that indicates your argument.
Save your document with your last name and an abbreviated title.
Start the Works Cited page right away.
Do not wait until the end to cite your sources!
Scholarly, Secondary, Peer-Reviewed Sources: While you may use web sites or reference sources (dictionaries, encyclopedias) for some information in your final paper they will not count in your one required academic source (published books and journal articles) written by experts and reviewed by other experts). Judge your sources very carefully. Remember to view web information with a very critical eye. The following also will not count in this part of your research:
• No websites
• No newsletters
• No newspaper articles
• No magazine articles
• No textbooks or chapters
• No book reviews: (watch out for this one since you will likely find a
number of these instead of longer scholarly sources)
• No encyclopedias or dictionaries
• No blogs
• No novels
• No short stories
• No memoirs or diaries
• No films
• No interviews
You can use these in addition to your more general research, but not for your scholarly source

What is the current context of the refugee situation? In answering this, I want you to consider the factors that have caused the situation such as civil conflict, international conflict and/or environmental factors.

In conducting your research, i expect you to examine and equally* address in writing the following aspects:

1. What is the current context of the refugee situation? In answering this, I want you to consider the factors that have caused the situation such as civil conflict, international conflict and/or environmental factors.
2. How did the situation come to this point? In answering this, I want you to consider the historical, political, economic and social factors that have influenced the situation and integrate this knowledge in your discussion.
3. What is the response (or lack of) from the respective State government to the refugee situation? What is the response from the international community? What is the response from the UNHCR? What is the response from other non-profit organizations?
4. Are there any viable alternative solutions that would bring an end to this situation? In answering this, I want you to consider options of repatriation, resettlement, reconciliation, ceasefire agreements and peace treaties.

Your term paper should include the following components:
Title: descriptive, informative.
Introduction: well-developed thesis statement, provides broad introduction and clearly identifies scope of problem and research approach.
Body: follows the development of the thesis statement, provides sufficient evidence, case study examples, situates case in broader theoretical context, considers alternative evidence to argument, contains broad depth of critical analysis.
Conclusion: provides adequate summary, closing remarks, further suggestions for research, restatement of thesis.
References and Research: A minimum of five adequate peer-reviewed research sources, relevant and varied academic sources, recent sources.

One of the most common errors in research and writing a case study is to over-emphasize the context of the situation (i.e. the facts and figures) without adequate attention to the critical response of the case study presented.

Often writers will neglect to provide enough space for an appropriate critical response, alternative solutions, current actions being taken and whether or not those actions are working. This is usually simply because they have taken too much space in writing about the context itself, and leave too little space for analysis.

It’s a much harder task to write a quality, condensed paper of 10 pages as it is far easier to write more, than less. Contrary to what you may think, a longer paper often has a lesser quality of writing, as it tends to be less concise and more long winded, including too many irrelevant details.

Think of a well written case study as being divided into four equal parts. With approximately 10 pages (3000 words minimum), each part equals approximately 2.5 pages.

Example

2.5 pages for your introduction and current context

2.5 pages for how the situation came to be (historical, social, political and economic factors)

2.5 pages for the response to the situation (from the State, international community, UNHCR, non-profit sector)

2.5 pages for viable alternative solutions (consider repatriation, resettlement, reconciliation, peace treaties, ceasefire agreements, etc.) and concluding statements

TOPIC OF THE TERM PAPER: In my final paper, I will be examining Burundi refugees seeking asylum in Tanzania.

KEY INFORMATION FOR THE SOURCES: Keep in mind that some of the refugee situations will be more difficult than others to find research sources, but don’t let that dissuade you from trying. I encourage you to follow the example of research that I have set forth in Module Two where we examine Burmese refugees in Thailand. To document their case, I looked at UNHCR data, government sources as well as non-government agencies and citizen action groups. These multiple sources created a more balanced view of the situation.
