Profile/Character Sketch

Directions take (Project 1A) i will upload down below and it expand more by using the examples shown below how it has to be, you can make it by how u think it’ll be just using the example papers I have provided to see how it has to be and also looking at everything the rubric has to be.

Purpose:
Project 1B provides you with an opportunity to expand upon Part A. In doing so, you will continue to explore various forms of research, and you will further expand your understanding of storytelling as it relates to nonfiction subjects. This project will also help to solidify the concepts of “angle” and “scope” as they relate to narrative journalism.
You will notice that the perspective will change from Part A, where you focused on an image and the words of the subject. Part B will rely on your voice to bring your subject off the page and into our lives. While I will be looking for strong focus, organization, structure, and development (like with any piece of writing), there is no prescription for exactly how to write an effective profile (though you can likely find plenty of blog posts that attest to just the opposite). Much of the learning with this project happen through “doing,” and there will be a struggle during the process (as there is meant to be)!
Skills: The purpose of this assignment is to help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success in this course and beyond:
understanding concepts of “angle” and “scope” as they relate to narrative journalism
understanding various techniques involved with storytelling as it relates to nonfiction subjects
applying your own voice to a piece of journalism
synthesizing your research into a clear and meaningful story that prioritizes your subject
evaluating and refining your research methods for both primary and secondary research
creating a clear and compelling character profile
Knowledge: This assignment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in this discipline:
“Angle” and “Scope”
Character development through “showing”
The difference between narrative and commentary, and how they both work in a piece of narrative journalism
Task:
Step 1: Gather all remaining information you need (if you don’t have all of the information that you need).
**Do you need to conduct the 2nd interview? A third? A follow-up email or phone/zoom conversation? Is there any secondary research that might help you better understand your subject?
**Remember that your personal observations can be just as important as the interview responses in terms of “characterizing” your subject, so pay attention to mannerisms, body language, objects, location, etc.!
Step 2: Identify the “angle” and “scope” that you plan to communicate within the article
**Why did you choose the subject you chose? Why do you want to share that with your audience? Why should your audience be interested? These questions will help to narrow the focus of your profile (i.e. the “angle” or what exactly you hope to communicate).
**Think back to your experiences with your subject. What narrative framework does that experience provide? How will you use that narrative framework to structure and organize your profile? (This all connects to the concept of “scope.”)
Step 3: Create an outline for the article (paragraph by paragraph).
**How will you open your article? With narrative immersion, or with commentary? What elements of fiction will you draw on throughout? How will setting, character, theme, point of view, and plot impact the structure and organization of the article?
**How will you organize your profile? Chronologically? With a particular event? Topically? How will “narrative” drive the piece?
Step 4: Develop the article (the goal is to “bring the subject off of the page” so that we feel like we know them deeply)
**How will you develop and “show” your subject? What character development techniques will you use? Scenes? Dialogue? Backstory? Vivid description? Etc.
**Consider all the ways in which people are who they are (physical/behavioral characteristics, interests/passions, relationships, background, spirit/attitude, etc.) I.e. How can you “reveal” your subject to be more than the sum of their parts?
**The best character profiles allow us to “see” them in action. Narrative and commentary are both needed; the balance is the tricky part.
Criteria for Success:
A successful Project 1B will meet the following:
1. A written profile/character sketch of your subject from Part A with a minimum of 1,000 words.
2. Adhere to basic conventions of composition: focus, organization, structure, development, mechanics, format, etc.
3. Bring the subject “off of the page” through character development, scene development, and a balance of showing/telling & narrative/commentary.
