Think about everyday virtues and vices, and cases of so-called weakness of the will (like procrastination, or trying to quit smoking). Why might Plato have departed from the Socratic that “Virtue is knowledge”, to add that “Knowledge must be in control”? Is knowledge sufficient for acting rightly?
watch this whole video and write a discussion about it.

1. Professor Burnyeat states that Socrates was “a man who thought for himself and taught others to think for themselves.” Is this teaching still relevant in our time?
2. Argue for or against one of the following Socratic claims: (a) “Doing justice is always to one’s benefit. Doing injustice always harms one.” (b) “Wrongdoing always reflects ignorance.” (Note: in recent years the word “ignorant” has come to be used in new ways, meaning something like “not considering others”, “prejudiced”, or just “immoral.” To me it’s fascinating how language changes and flows. The older and still prominent meaning of “ignorant” relates to its Latin root “ignorare”, which is translated as “without knowledge.” In answering this prompt, please understand “ignorant” to mean lacking knowledge.)
3. Why does Plato think that we must possess innate ideas, and how does Plato’s view connect with the Socratic Method?
Your responses should be expansive and detailed. Make sure that you clarify and explain your claims, and use examples to illustrate them. Try to string together your thoughts to provide support for your conclusions, by identifying key if…then and either…or statements. Check out the following document for suggestions on how working up from the sentence-level grammar can lead to more complex and detailed thinking.

You will use the link above to submit your Research Paper.
Note: Before beginning this assignment, read through information contained in the Scholastic Honesty link on the course menu to the left.
The core assignment of this course is a documented research paper (1500-2000 words in length, approx. 6-8 pages double-spaced, 12-point font).
The paper should support a thesis statement with information gained from research or investigation.
The paper will not be just a report presenting information but will be a paper that carefully examines and presents your own historical interpretation of the topic you have chosen and your interpretation of the information you have gathered.
The paper may include consideration of problems and solutions, definition of key terms, or may refute arguments against your thesis statement.
It will be important to choose a topic of interest to you.
Approach this assignment with an open and skeptical mind, then form an opinion based on what you have discovered.
You must suspend beliefs while you are investigating and let the discoveries shape your opinion. (This is a thesis-finding approach.)
Once you have found your thesis, write the paper to support it.
You will use some of the following critical thinking skills in this process:
Choosing an appropriate topic, limiting the topic.
Gathering information, summarizing sources.
Analyzing and evaluating sources.
Defining key terms.
Synthesizing information, comparing and contrasting sources.
Testing a thesis, making a historical argument, using refutation.
Amassing support for a position.
Documenting sources.
Because this may be a longer paper than you have written before and a complex process is involved, it is recommended that you complete this paper using the following steps:
Choose a topic related to chapters covered in The American Yawp, (Chapters 16-30) that you would truly like to explore and that you are willing to spend some time on. Your chosen topic should be focused. Pose a question that you really want to answer. You may want to begin with more than one topic in mind.
Do some preliminary reading on the topic(s). You may begin with the textbook, then further explore the information available. Refine your topic. Summarize your topic, your interest in the topic, the questions you want to answer, and a hypothesis you want to test.
Gather information from a variety of sources. Use a minimum of four sources for your paper, and at least one must be a primary source.
Primary sources are contemporary to the times under investigation.
An example of a secondary source is our textbook, though the textbook also contains excerpts of primary sources, which you may use as a source in your paper.
Outline the results of your research and the plan for your paper (you are not required to submit the outline).
Write the final draft and be sure to include a Works Cited List, and use the correct MLA documentation style.

In your second post, choose another student’s post to reply to. Imagine that you’re a critic of the arguments in the text. In a first short paragraph, can you think of an objection to the argument that the student identified? Be sure that you’re not simply rejecting the conclusion, but rather think carefully about the reasons that he gives in support of his conclusion, and try to give a strong criticism of the argument that the student has outlined from the first chapter.
This week’s discussion forum assignment is in two parts.
1. In this week’s module, among other topics, we are studying the relationship between moral philosophy and organized religion. Many people think morality and religion are intimately linked and would be surprised by the arguments presented in Chapter 1 of the text. In your first post, answer this question: Of the many reasons the author gives for philosophically separating our moral reasoning from our religious understanding, which of his arguments do you think is the strongest? Why? Try to carefully outline his reasoning, showing how it supports his conclusion, even if in the end you disagree with his conclusion. Your first post is due by Wednesday at 11:59pm. While I encourage you to type your post into a word processor to check for spelling and grammar errors, please don’t “attach”: simply copy/paste your issue into the discussion box. Forum responses should be 200+ words, and include a “references” or “works cited” section.090.1740084
2. Finally, in a second short paragraph, who do you think has the strongest argument — the textbook, or your own critical objection? Try to choose a thread with no other replies, so that everyone gets a reply, and no one gets too many. The idea here is that we’re trying to determine what is the best approach to making moral judgments, especially as they are related to religious questions. Your last post is due by Sunday at 11:59pm. Again, while I encourage you to use the spell check feature of your word processing software, please don’t “attach”: simply copy/paste your post into the discussion box. Replies should be 300+ words, and include a “references” or “works cited” section.

Post your plan on the Discussion Board for peer review. Review and comment on at least 2 other teaching plans. Cite at least 2 peer-reviewed references published within the past 5 years.
