Analytic Essay of John Updike’s short Story “aA & P”
you will analyze John Updike’s short story “A & P” and, using plot, discuss how the story is or is not a “coming-of-age” story. A coming-of-age story usually suggests a loss of innocence and/or an “epiphany” that leads to maturity. It may mean an acceptance of responsibility and becoming more like an adult. For this paper, you must point out crucial parts of the plot (possibly using Freytag’s Pyramid) that support or do not support this “coming-of-age” label.
Remember that your essay must contain brief relevant background information for the author in the beginning paragraph and quotes taken from the story’s content with accompanying in-text citations in the essay’s body paragraphs.
Assignment: For this essay, you will write up to two pages (no less than one) that includes an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion citing examples that support your thesis. The essay will include a minimum of two sources (including the Literature textbook) shown in the form of in-text cited quotes and/or paraphrases with a Works Cited page (not counted in the one to two pages).
NOTE: Essays are never conversational and should not contain pronouns such as “I,” “you,” or “we.” The subject matter should be foremost in the writer’s mind and should guide where he or she is going with his or her thesis in every part of the essay.
Length: 1-2 pages and Works Cited page, typed, Times New Roman, 12 Font, double-spaced
Format: MLA

Provide a critical review of a YouTube Demonstration video.
Purpose & Audience:
For this assignment, you will select and view a YouTube Demonstration. Choose one of the following videos:

How to make frozen hot chocolate
How to do the Charleston (dance)
You will then write an essay in which you critically analyze the video you selected by pointing out its strengths and weaknesses.

Audience Analysis Survey
Audience Analysis Survey
Topic/Description:
Use a Google Form to create a survey that will gauge your audience’s knowledge level on your chosen TED Talk topic.
Purpose & Audience:
As we’ve already discussed, knowing your audience is an integral part of effective communication. Through this assignment, you will have the opportunity to learn what your audience already knows about your chosen topic so that you may tailor your message accordingly. Additionally, you will also need to assist in helping your classmates gather the same knowledge about their chosen topics.
Instructions:
Create a new Google Form
If you are unfamiliar with Google forms, there are many helpful (and brief) tutorial videos on YouTube, including the one found here. Additionally, you can view a sample of a completed survey by clicking here.
Create questions about your topic, including one of *each* of the following question types:
Fixed-alternative (e.g. yes/no, choice a/choice b, etc.)
Scale (e.g. on a scale of 1-10, how likely are you..)
Open-ended (e.g. When it comes to (topic), what do you wish you knew more about?)
Here is an example of an audience analysis survey: Analyzing Your Audience
Drafting/Research Strategies:
Remember that an audience will tune out if the information presented to them is overly simplistic or overly complex. As you consider what questions to ask, try to choose questions that will help you establish a baseline level of your audience’s understanding/awareness on your topic, while not losing them with simplicity or over-complication (i.e. avoid jargon, etc.).
Why is this survey-process important? It is important to know your audience’s knowledge-level on the topic so that you can adapt the information in your next speech appropriately to meet audience needs, while providing a substantive argument. Moreover, learning how to use Google Form is a great tool for your future (or current) career.
English .. categorical evaluation argument
For our first essay, you will write a categorical evaluation argument of approximately 800-1000 words (probably around 4-6 paragraphs). You should organize this argument using the Classical Argument structure described in Ch. 14.
Choosing a Topic
A categorical evaluation claim asserts that something is a good or bad example of its kind. This is different from an evaluation that just examines whether something is good or bad morally or whether something has good or bad effects!
You can evaluate just about anything. Just be sure you can clearly identify both the thing you are evaluating (X) and the category in which the thing belongs (Y). Your claim should the model “X is a good (or bad) Y.” For example:
Thing: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
Category: Sci-fi novel series
Possible claim: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells is a good sci-fi novel series.
A few other fun categories to consider:
Restaurants
Hobbies
Jobs
Places to live
Schools
Products
Media (books, movies, TV shows)
Games
Video games
You are encouraged to choose a topic that won’t require you to do any outside research. The more familiar you are with the thing you’re evaluating, the better; you can draw your evidence from personal experience/observation. If you do end up using outside research in this essay, you should cite it in either MLA 8th/9th edition or APA 7th edition. Do your best using the tools you have; we will delve more into citations in the next essay.
Note: It is possible that you wrote an evaluation essay for the final essay in your Comp 1 class. It is also likely that you’ve written other evaluation essays in the past. This is a good place to remind you that you must write NEW work for this course; recycling work from previous classes without your instructor’s express permission is considered Academic Dishonesty.
Final drafts will be graded according to the following rubric*:
The essay focuses on a clear categorical evaluation claim that is supported by 2-4 clearly and thoroughly developed lines of reasoning and evidence, including effective responses to opposing views. /35
The essay effectively uses a classical structure (traditional, revised, or blended). /20
The essay is written in appropriately academic style. /20
The author shows attention to detail, avoiding careless mistakes in grammar or documentation*. /15
You may earn bonus points for the following:
-Creative and original topic selection
-Excellent uses of rhetorical devices
-A particularly strong title
-Any other thing that’s not required but is impressive

make suggestions for how the legislation might help prevent legal or ethical concerns in future policies. Support your suggestions with
evidence.
iii. What other changes to the legislation would make it more effective in serving intended beneficiaries? Consider the cost, public
acceptance, and political feasibility issues you identified above in making your suggestions.
e. Be sure to use language and communication strategies appropriate for political or organizational leaders in explaining your organization’s
