AUTO-ETHNOGRAPHY: this project consists of a series of exercises, which ask you to think about ways in which your everyday life is personally affected by race, class and gender. You will write one short paper (4-5 pages double-spaced). There are three components to the paper that I will be evaluating: description, definition, and application).
1) Write one to three paragraphs describing an event in your life that was pivotal to your identity formation( I’M VIETNAMESE) with regard to race, class, or gender. Perhaps it was especially confusing, but now you have a better sense of the event since taking this class. (Label this part of the paper “event”). This is a description
2) Write one to three paragraphs in which you outline, clarify and define a concept from the reading that you will later apply to the event. You should draw directly on the reading for this portion of the paper, citing a specific text including the author’s name, year and page number. (Label this part of the paper “concept”). This requires a definition of a concept, for example if the event had to do with race the concept would be racism. Use the text book or class articles to define racism, if the event had to do with gender then define gender or sexism etc. Other concepts covered in class include disability and social class
I expect quotations from the readings in this part. Readings in the first part of the text book. (“Race, Class and Gender in the United States- an Integrated Study” by Paula S. Rothenberg) can be very helpful in this section of the paper
3) Write one to three paragraphs in which you analyze the event as it relates to the concept you defined in section two.
Analyze the concept for the ways in which it is a learned and transmitted cultural production that shapes our lives in certain ways. (Label this part of the paper “analysis”). In this section you make connections between the concept and the event. Explain any concerns or questions that the experience may have brought up for you. This is also where you may express personal opinion.
Points will be lost for not addressing each section clearly.
Papers with grammatical errors will be marked down
Use 12 point font also have 1-inch margins, and do not include additional spaces between paragraphs please number the pages in your paper, and observe other standard editorial practices. Three quotes maximum
Use MLA style
