Description of the Problem:
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread health, social, and economic impacts across the globe. Countries have been forced to weigh the benefits of public health mandates that help to curb spread of the disease, with the potential costs of such mandates on other aspects of social and economic flourishing. In the United States, policy responses to COVID-19 have occurred largely at the state level, with states varying widely in their approach to combatting both the disease itself and the second-order consequences of the disease, such as job or income loss. How effective have florida and New York’s state policies been toward these two goals? Were there any unintended consequences of these policies? And finally, how might this problem have been better (or worse) addressed at the federal or local levels of government?
