You are a World War II veteran who was just recently contacted by a researcher at the National Archives in Philadelphia. This researcher is organizing testimonials from WWII veterans about their experiences during the War. Your children have always wanted you to write a book about your service during World War II so now is the perfect chance!
The researcher would like to read the chapter about your experiences on and off the battlefield. Your chapter should be at least 3-4 pages and must include the following:
· Vivid depiction of your involvement in a major battle in which US was directly involved in one of the following theatres, Europe, Africa, or Pacific- (Please note the following are NOT options for this paper: Pearl Harbor, dropping of atomic bombs, Stalingrad, and other battles where Americans were not present).
o Give an eyewitness account of what occurred
o Describe your part in the battle (MUST be an American in a battle fought by Americans)- You can be either male soldier or female noncombat
o Talk about the other unit members’ involvement in the battle (include your relationship with these soldiers and how experiencing the war affected your life)
o Any other pertinent information that you feel is needed but please check with me.
Please note: Official US Air Force was not created until AFTER World War II. If choosing to be a pilot, please associate with other branches’ air divisions.
Project must be in first person and “I” statements may be used. NO contractions and no improper language. Do NOT pose a question in formal papers. While WWII veterans’ accounts are easily attained, please know that plagiarism of these heroic men and women’s stories is considered plagiarism.
Please note: Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated- please see course syllabus and Student Handbook for more information.
A works consulted page must be present on the last page of your memoir. Memoirs should be at least full 3-4 pages (not including end notes or citations).
To meet page minimum, length must be at least to the bottom of page 3- please do not increase margins, font size, punctuation size, or spacing to meet this minimum or else points will be deducted. Please follow all Chicago formatting rules and regulations.
All memoirs must use Chicago citations at the end. Memoirs will also be graded on creativity, organization, grammar, spelling, neatness, and knowledge of your topic.
All papers must use at least three sources with web urls at the end of EVERY endnote and citation- textbook should NOT be used as a source.
If utilizing a website, it must use .org, .edu, .gov, or .mil because websites ending in .com are not always reliable. Wikipedia, Spartacus.schoolnet.co, imdb.org, and library.thinkquest.org are absolutely unacceptable.
Remember to be creative! Give your characters creative names and military ranks. Make your researcher feel as if he or she was really there!
