For each source clearly establish the causal mechanism the author(s) put forward to explain a given public policy phenomenon
• Note: a causal mechanism is the explanation of the cause – or more often the causal nexus or conditions – responsible for producing a specific policy outcome
• You may choose to write your response in full paragraph format or as a series of bullet points (so long as you do so with clear structure and grammar)
Each response should be no longer than 1pg

Evaluation:
You will be evaluated on your overall ability to clearly communicate an understanding of the subject material. The criteria for the exam are
• Demonstrate evidence of a close reading of assigned material and engagement with lecture materials.
• Ability to clearly express the key concepts and ideas. • Produce well-structured answers with a clear thesis.
• Awareness of the tensions/problems that the thinkers are responding to/grappling with.
• You are NOT expected to produce original/creative arguments for the purposes of the exam. You are being evaluated on your overall comprehension of assigned course materials.
Grade Scheme:
• A: Demonstrates knowledge of course materials; awareness of nuances of arguments; clearly written, well-structured essays
• B: Demonstrates engagement/familiarity with key arguments; emphasizes key points without attention to nuances, caveats, fine details of argument; relatively clearly written essay
• C: Evidence of reading/engagement of primary materials with some over-simplification, misreading or confusion; focuses on key ideas without relating reading back to details of the argument; some opacity/confusion in the writing/structure
