Professor Initial Post: There are already machine-learning systems that are more accurate at making differential diagnoses than most physicians and these systems are only getting smarter. Fifty-three percent of Kaiser’s patient visits last year were done by smartphone, videoconference or kiosk. It’s impossible to predict what’s going to evolve with technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI )innovation will change the way we practice medicine. You as a healthcare administer, what do you see as your biggest challenge?

Student response: The healthcare industry is competitive and technological advances play an important yet costly role. Many healthcare organizations have started offering telehealth and telemedicine. They increase patient access to care while modernizing practices of healthcare organizations but may be accompanied with costly start-up or maintenance fees. Providers can treat patients without the patient ever having to step foot in the clinic or hospital. A large majority of all healthcare organizations have moved to electronic healthcare records which makes it easier for specialists or external providers to obtain information regarding the patient’s treatment however, it increases risk for cyberattacks and personal identifiable information breaches. In 2019, there were hundreds of healthcare data breaches exposing millions of individual records and costing U.S. healthcare organizations an average of $15 million per 25,575 records (Seh et al., 2020). I think our biggest challenges as healthcare administrators will be preventing against cyberattacks on our electronic health record systems, misdiagnosis from becoming so dependent on technology, and the millions of dollars it will take to recover from these challenges. Prepare a student response on Aging Population/Chronic Disease.

Assignment Question

Prepare a student response on Aging Population/Chronic Disease.

Professor Initial Post: “We use data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) to document the medical spending of Americans aged 65 and older. We find that medical expenses more than double between ages 70 and 90.” Would a prevention approach benefit to decrease the rising cost? Student response: A preventative approach would help decrease costs. Compared to the costs of 1.6 billion for secondary and 1.7 billion for cross-classified treatments, primary clinical preventive services are anticipated to yield a net savings of $7 billion (−0.4 percent of 2006 PHCE) (Yong et al., 2010). This can be done through many approaches. For example, it is important for the elderly to get regular checkups, screenings, and routine work. This can assist in identifying any health problems in their early stages, enabling prompt action, and halting the progression of illnesses. Along with that, promoting health education is another effective preventative method. It is important to spread awareness and for the elderly to understand how going for regular screenings can have a significant impact. These preventive actions not only help the elderly live longer and in better health, but they also reduce the financial strain on the healthcare system by preventing costly hospital stays and treatments that are frequently required for illnesses that can be avoided. Therefore, prevention methods are most definitely a very effective approach to help decrease the rising costs associated with healthcare. This approach should be given top priority since it not only lowers expenses but also plays a vital role in encouraging better lifestyles.
