The philosopher Thomas Nagel wrote a famous essay called “What is it like to be a bat?” It is a serious attempt to understand what it means to say that something is something–something very different from some other thing. We can wonder about people, too. What was it like to be Napoleon, or George Washington, or some famous movie star. There is their outer appearance, but that is not what Nagel is after.

When we look at the bat cartoon above, the artist showed the kinds of things Nagel means when we view the life of a bat: the places it lives, the time of day it thrives in, the other animals it associates with. But Nagel is after something much more than these things.
The interesting thing about bats is how they perceive objects in the world external to them. We all know that bats let out a screech, but what most people don’t know is that screech is the method bats use to see objects, not hear them. A bat’s senses work something like the sonar on a submarine. The sonar sends out a ping and when that ping hits an object, some of the energy of the ping is lost, and some of the energy is sent out in different directions, including a direction that leads it right back to the submarine. A receiver in the ship picks up the returning ping (vibration) and registers the difference in pitch. That difference in pitch tells the sailor operating the sonar, what kind of object lies ahead, whether it be a rock or another ship.
In the same way, a bat sends out a screech which when it hits an object ahead of it is reduced in energy and the returning screech has a different pitch or vibration. The bat takes that returning bit of energy and turns it into a picture of the object ahead. It uses sound to create images.
Nagel makes much of this because as we know, we make images and colors from light energy which hits our eyes and is transduced by the brain into the images that we see. What Nagel claims then is that it is impossible for us to even imagine how this is experienced within a bat. It is beyond us. While we can understand this scientifically, we cannot ever know what it is like to experience life in the way of a bat.
Nagel comes to some conclusions about all of this week’s reading. For your assignment explain why Nagel’s idea is so important.

Martin Heidegger constructed new words to express his philosophy which focuses on Dasein. The word may seem mysterious to us, but it is simply the German word, das sein, or Being. In our text’s discussion of this, we find that Heidegger uses the following words to express his vision of Being: Being-in-the-world; present-at-hand; and ready-to-hand. He uses these terms to illustrate the world and our activities in it in a dramatically new way–a way which he says is closer to reality than the way we usually think. Heidegger is a difficult philosopher to understand, but we can make an attempt at it by first, explaining the terms he uses, and second, seeing how those terms relate to his discussion of everyday objects, in his case a hammer.
So the assignment this week is to do a close reading of the pages in our reading that have to do with Dasein. Heidegger uses the method of phenomenology to help him with this question. So begin by explaining what phenomenology is. Our reading continues with a discussion of “Being-in-the-World” which explains his conception of ready-to-hand and his famous example of a hammer. Why does he use an example like that? What is he getting at? Then finally the chapter deals with “The ‘Who’ of Dasein.” It is here that he explains the difference between living an authentic or an inauthentic life. Explain what he means about that and “averageness.”
Once you have finished looking at these individual aspects of his thinking, write a paragraph explaining your overall impression of what Heidegger has to say.

Nietzsche’s books are full of arrogance and bravado, but underneath all of that was a brilliant, profoundly caring man who was on the one hand very angry at the path taken in philosophy because of Plato, and on the other hand very anxious to put all of that behind us to begin anew to find meaning and value in our lives. He battled a crippling mental disease from the time he was in his 20s until his death at 55. He was almost always ill and yet he traveled about Europe finding climates that helped his condition and wrote 15 books. Very few people read them. That may have been a good thing; for if they had, his life would no doubt have been in great danger. People don’t take too kindly to books that ridicule culture and religion as misguided, Nietzsche’s books are like that. Today we might compare him to people who are full of themselves. Behind the pompous mask, was a very serious man with a serious mission; to lead us in a new and better direction.
Using information from the video below and especially from your reading this week, what direction do you think he wished us to take? What must we become if we are to save ourselves?
