Option #1 (Proposal): Writing a Petition on Change.org
Purpose: The objective of this assignment is to practice persuasive writing, which includes the elements of logos, pathos and ethos as well as practice writing a proposal.
Topic: According to Google dictionary, petitions are “a formal written request, typically one signed by many people, appealing to authority with respect to a particular cause.” In order for a petition to be strong, the writing must have strong logos (reason, logic and factual information), convincing ethos (credible sources, ethical ideas, unbiased and logical writing) and moving pathos (emotional connection to the writing).
Writing Task: First, open up at Change.org account. Then, browse through some of the trending petitions on the website. There are thousands already published, so please go through a few to get a good idea of what will be expected. Since this website is open to everyone, you will find both strongly and weakly written petitions. Read both to give yourself an idea of what you should aim for and what you should try to avoid. Follow the steps on the website to publish your petition (there are 4 steps total). After publishing your petition, I want you to copy/paste the URL at the bottom of your essay. Once again, our assignment is to:
Publish a petition on Change.org.
Tips:
* Contextualize the problem. Background information will be needed, so make sure to provide it (i.e. who, what, when, where). Be very specific.
* The petition must have a specific recipient, so do your research prior to publishing your it. Ask yourself: who can help you with your request?
* Be respectful and persuasive (try using logos, pathos and ethos to win this argument). Your objective is to get signatures that can lead to a change, so make sure you are not excluding or insulting audiences. Avoid aggressive, offensive, and biased language.
* Do research. Throughout your petition, I would like you to use three credible sources: one source should be a credible media article (preferably from a newspaper or magazine), one source should be a scholarly article (published in a scholarly journal), and the third source should be a credible media or multimedia option that you choose yourself (Change.org recommends using a strong visual image since it increases the chances of signatures on the platform). Though petitions generally don’t have a Works Cited page, I would like you to still provide one when you submit this proposal in our assignment portal (I’m not requiring it in the published version, but I do want the Works Cited when you submit your assignment on Canvas).
* Your petition should be 4-6 pages. Petitions don’t follow MLA rules; they look more like online newspaper/magazine articles with a title, a picture (which is recommended but not required), and the article itself. For this assignment, you don’t have to follow the MLA format, but I do ask that you double-space to leave me a little bit of room to comment.
Option #2 (Evaluation): Evaluating a Controversial Argument
Purpose: The objective of this assignment is to practice persuasive writing, which includes the elements of logos, pathos and ethos as well as practice writing an evaluation.
Topic: Evaluations are everyday arguments that help individuals make decisions. Should I vaccinate my child? Should I become vegan? Am I spending too much time in front of the TV? These are some issues that can generate strong evaluations. To help your audience reach a decision, it is important to establish compelling criteria that weighs the evidence before leading to a judgment. A strong evaluation includes opinion based on observation and fact, not based on personal assumptions and biases.
Writing Task: Begin with research. What are some arguments people have made that you find yourself disagreeing with? You will need to choose one and write an evaluation essay disproving that argument. This argument can be a speech (maybe from a political figure), a lecture (possibly from a professor), a podcast (like Joe Rogan), a blog (choose someone credible), a tweet (our President has tons), and the list goes on. You will need to find the original source and include it in your Works Cited page. Then, do the following:
Evaluate your chosen argument with the intent to disprove it.
Tips:
* Contextualize the argument. Background information will be needed, so make sure to provide it (i.e. who, what, when, where). Be very specific. For example, is the tweet you’re analyzing in response to a bigger issue? You will need to clearly identify the issue itself.
* Brainstorm the argument by creating specific criteria. For instance, you might want to begin by asking, “Does this argument violate any person’s rights?” Or you might want to ask, “Is this argument based on biased opinion?” Remember, a strong evaluation is not going to be based on your personal preferences or assumptions. For example, if you’re evaluating an argument against chocolate, you shouldn’t argue that the writer’s argument is weak because you love chocolate.
* Be persuasive by considering the logos, pathos and ethos of the argument you’re evaluating. You might want to ask yourself what evidence the argument provides, how the writer of the argument tries to build credibility, and how the writer tries to appeal to the emotions of the reader. Avoid aggressive, offensive language and work on your stylistic flow.
* If you’re critiquing the argument, identify fallacies in the author’s line of reasoning.
* Do research. I would like you to use three credible sources: one source should be a credible media article (preferably from a newspaper or magazine), one source should be a scholarly article (published in a scholarly journal), and the third can be any credible media or multimedia source you choose yourself. You must provide a Works Cited page that includes all outside sources as well as the original argument you’re analyzing.
* Your evaluation should be 4-6 pages and should follow MLA rules. For more on the MLA structure, please visit the Purdue Owl (Links to an external site.) link I posted on our Canvas page.

Directions: Please answer each of the following questions as thoroughly as possible. Pick two types of forensic analysis (e.g., latent prints, firearms, etc…). For each, answer the following questions:

Introduction
This portfolio work project will allow you to review information and risks associated with an investment to expand an organization. As this information will be shared broadly across the organization, you will have a choice in your final deliverable audience and will organize your deliverable to meet the needs of that audience.

Scenario
ZXY Company is a food product company. ZXY is considering expanding to two new products and a second production facility. The food products are staples with steady demands. The proposed expansion will require an investment of $7,000,000 for equipment with an assumed ten-year life, after which all equipment and other assets can be sold for an estimated $1,000,000. They will be renting the facility. ZXY requires a 12 percent return on investments. You have been asked to recommend whether or not to make the investment.

Your Role
You are an accounting manager. Your boss has asked you to review and provide a recommendation on the expansion based on information that has been provided.

Requirements
In preparing and supporting your recommendation to either make the investment or not, include the following items as part of your analysis:

Analysis of financial information.
Identification of risks associated with the investment. Consider:
How risky the project appears.
How far off your estimates of revenues and expenses can be before your decision would change.
The difference if the company were to use a straight line versus a MACRS depreciation.
Recommendation for a course of action.
Explanation of criteria supporting your recommendation.
Financial Information
As part of your analysis you might find that additional information from marketing, accounting, or finance would be useful in making an informed and well-supported recommendation. In a real workplace setting you would have the ability to ask for that information. However, for the purposes of this assessment, you can make assumptions about the values of that data or ratios in support of your recommendation.

Accounting worked with the marketing group to create the ZXY Company Financial Statements spreadsheet for the new products business and the new facility.

Notes about the financial information:

The expense line labeled SQF FDA Mandates refers to the costs of complying with Food and Drug Administration requirements.
Depreciation expense is calculated using 7-year life modified accelerated cost recovery system (MACRS).
Deliverable Format
Depending on the audience you choose to address, use one of the following options:

Report for a mid-management audience. Prepare a 3–4 page report detailing your recommendation and the information you used to make your recommendation.
Presentation for top leadership. Prepare a presentation of at least 12 slides detailing your recommendation and the information you used to make your recommendation. You may use your choice of presentation software. Include notes with additional details.
Keep in mind that your recommendation may be shared with others, so your materials should be designed for clarity and readability.

The recommendation report is a professional document and should therefore follow the corresponding MBA Academic and Professional Document Guidelines, including single-spaced paragraphs.

The Assignment: Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” is one of the most oft anthologized pieces of American fiction, having been a staple of introductory English courses for generations. This classic piece of literature has been adapted into and referenced in movies, plays, songs, television series, and works of art. You can choose to construct your paper by answering the questions in one, two, or all three of these prompts. You can answer whichever questions you desire inside each prompt as well. 1) What is wrong with the narrator? Why is she in this condition? Is there someone or something to blame for her plight? What symptoms does she have? How does her condition change over the course of the plot and what is the lowest depth of her condition? 2) Discuss the portrayal of the wallpaper itself. Symbolically, what does the wallpaper represent? How does its particulars in terms of pattern play a role in the story? Why is yellow used as its color? Why does the w allpaper fascinate the narrator so much? 3) Some critics claim that the story is a feminist manifesto written twenty-eight years before women got the right to vote in the United States. How might a feminist scholar interpret this work? How are both men and women portrayed in the story? What does this story have to say about each gender’s place in society at the end of the 19th century? Think of these papers as being arguments; you are trying to defend your interpretations. You’ll do that by using the text itself; reference parts of the story to defend your claims. Be sure to have an introduction for your essay and use transitions as you move between the different parts of this prompt. Act as if the reader of your essay has some familiarity with the text but hasn’t thought about it critically. Write paper answering this prompt: Sara can be characterized as a “Romantic child,” defined by Hintz and Tribunella as a child who is “somehow purer and more virtuous than adults, closer to nature and God, and beautified by their naivete” (Reading Children’s Literature 17). However, Sara can also be characterized as a child who is a “miniature adult,” taking on roles and responsibilities typically associated with grown women, not young girls, even from the novel’s earliest pages (Reading Children’s Literature 26). Looking at the entirety of Sara’s story, write an essay that explores her relationship to these contrasting conceptions of childhood. Which of these models is most dominant in Sara’s character, or most impactful on the audience? Does she find a balance between the two or does one type win out over the other? Another option for this topic would be to argue that Sara fulfills one of the other “types’ of child defined by Hintz and Tribunella better than these two.
