Assignment 1: Multiple Intelligences in Daily Life
For many years, IQ (intelligence quotient) was considered to be the indicator of intelligence. An IQ score is determined through standardized testing, often characterized by measures of a person’s verbal comprehension skills, working memory capacity, perceptual reasoning ability, and processing skills. IQ represents a narrow conceptualization of intelligence and is traditionally focused on skills related to academic success. Intelligence was once thought to be stable throughout one’s lifespan. In other words, no amount of education or studying could change your IQ score or capacity to learn. Fortunately, the research of psychologist Robert Sternberg and others indicated otherwise, confirming that intelligence can vary, can be developed over one’s lifetime, and extends beyond the traditional skills associated with IQ. In this week’s resources, you will consider Sternberg’s theory of successful intelligence and a theory from another well-known giant in the field of intelligence, Howard Gardner. Gardner identified seven distinct intelligences that offer a much broader and more realistic view of the concept, and account for individual differences and cultural context.
In this assignment, you will apply a theory of multiple intelligence to your own life by identifying the intelligences you use throughout the day, as well as which intelligences come easily to you and which could be developed further.

Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice
A walk through the Business section of any bookstore or a quick Internet search on the topic will reveal a seemingly endless supply of writings on leadership. Formal research literature is also teeming with volumes on the subject.
However, your own observation and experiences may suggest these theories are not always so easily found in practice. Not that the potential isn’t there; current evidence suggests that leadership factors such as emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, for example, can be highly effective for leading nurses and organizations.
Yet, how well are these theories put to practice? In this Discussion, you will examine formal leadership theories. You will compare these theories to behaviors you have observed firsthand and discuss their effectiveness in impacting your organization.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and examine the leadership theories and behaviors introduced.
Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.

Post two key insights you had from the scholarly resources you selected. Describe a leader whom you have seen use such behaviors and skills, or a situation where you have seen these behaviors and skills used in practice. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain to what extent these skills were effective and how their practice impacted the workplace.

In Chapter One of White and Griffith, Table 1.10 gives some indicators of an Operational Scorecard – Performance Measures for Individual teams and Activities (p. 31) and Table 1.11 gives a Template of Strategic Measures of Health Care Organization Performance (p. 32). Another tool that can be used to assess an organization strategically is the balanced scorecard. “Quantified goals and measures substantially reduce ambiguity and clarify each team’s and associate’s obligation”. The Balanced Scorecard is described in the additional readings in the files (attached here)

Would you add or take away any dimensions to the balanced scorecard? What happens if the board ignores a dimension? Can management prepare plans that improve all dimensions of the scorecard, or are some dimensions permanently in conflict? What should the board do if a dimension is below benchmark and not improving? How would you relate the balanced scorecard to how Paul Levy addressed the issues with BID?
In some cases, organizations have used the Balanced Scorecard as a tool in developing their implementation plan; sort of a checklist to make sure they have covered the key areas of their business or service. An example of that, the Kenyan Red Cross, is listed below. Here is an organization with limited resources that is using this tool to chart its way forward. Feel free to comment on this and the Balanced Scorecard’s usefulness in other organizations.

DHS works closely with international partners, including foreign governments, major multilateral organizations, and global businesses, to strengthen the homeland security of the United States. These agreements involve international trade, security, travel, and global economies. For example, DHS is engaged internationally and has stationed homeland personnel in over 75 foreign nations.
Select one of DHS’s international agreements and provide background, the purpose and benefits of the agreement, the key stakeholders, and the terms of the agreement. In your conclusion, make a recommendation if DHS should remain in the agreement and if so, should the agreement be expand.
