In this article, the authors lay out a simple, back-of-the-envelope approach for evaluating the costs and benefits of counterterrorism spending that uses only four variables: the consequences of a successful attack, the likelihood of a successful attack, the degree to which the security measure reduces risk, and the cost of the security measure. To illustrate this approach, the authors apply it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to assess if its counterterrorism effort reduces the terrorism risk enough to justify its cost.
In your article critique, identify the article premise and supporting points on whether or not the authors’ vulnerability analysis and risk assessment approaches of the FBI’s efforts reduced the terrorism risk enough to justify its cost over a period of time. If so, how? If not, why? The article mentions that the Transportation Security Administration body scanner technology costs about $1.2 billion but does not mention any technology that the FBI is spending its budget on. Do you think this was an oversight or intentional? What new technology is the FBI actually employing? The article also does not address how the FBI is using geographical information systems (GIS) in domestic terror risk assessment and vulnerability analysis. Quickly research how the FBI is using GIS; how could the authors incorporate this information into the article? In addition to the content in the article, discuss two additional technology related recommendations that could be integrated into the author’s findings.

Now you have chosen two musicians, perused basic information about them and listened to some of their music.
The next steps are to locate books, scholarly articles, primary sources and more recordings to understand the two musicians and begin to form a thesis about how they relate to each other.
The instructions for Written Assignment #5 are pretty simple…
1) Write a draft thesis sentence for your essay.
(In other words, how these 2 artists- and their MUSIC- compare to each other.)
2) List the six most persuasive FACTS of evidence supporting your argument. (This does not mean a listing of your sources.)
… but before you can form a thesis, you’ll need to research, listen, and then mull over what you discover. You want to make sure that your thesis is backed up
by evidence.
Here is what you need to know about research, listening, and thesis requirements for the final project.
LISTENING
When you are studying musical history, listening to music is actually a form of research! For this assignment you are required to listen to music by each musician, to include descriptions of their music in the essay, and to use the music you hear as evidence for your argument.
Keep a notebook to jot down impressions of music you listen to for the project. You can easily do it 5 or 10 minutes at a time. Your written notes will be useful in analyzing your musicians’ work.
In your final project essay you are required to include one paragraph describing a song by one of the musicians, and another paragraph about a song by the other musician. Figure out which song description to use to support your thesis, or to set the stage for your essay, and begin to sketch that out.
Also you are required to refer to a minimum of two additional specific songs or instrumental works in the essay. If you do keep a listening notebook you’ll want to use it for this.
III. OTHER SOURCES AND RESEARCH
You can get your bearings by reading Wikipedia articles and the like. Then consult books, scholarly articles, and primary sources.
Primary sources are evidence from the time of the musician you are studying. A primary source could be a newspaper or magazine article from the musicians’ time, a letter from the musician or their friends, advertisements from the musician’s era, photographs, recorded interviews, and so on. The CSUS librarians can help you locate primary sources if you have any trouble.
For this essay, you are required to quote from (or describe evidence provided by, in the case of visual media) a minimum of two primary sources.
Also include a bibliography.
FORMING A THESIS
In the essay, I’d like you to present and argue for a thesis about how the musicians relate to one another. I ask this because it will help you better understand the musicians, their work, and their places in American musical history. As you think about the relationship between the artists, ask yourself about subjects such as the following: the musicians’ work, lives, styles, influence, and relationship to a geographical era. Also consider the themes we have observed in our study of American music all semester:
Music is often essential to a person’s identity as an individual or as a member of one or more societal groups. The group may be defined in any of a wide variety of ways: by common interest, ethnicity, class, place of birth, occupation, political orientation, religion, regional area, family tradition, nationality, insider or outsider status, participation in popular culture, and so on. Cultural interactions influence the history of musical style. Broadly speaking, the music of groups outside the mainstream is often adopted and adapted by mainstream culture; the mainstream version of “outsiders’ music” often lacks some of the vitality and distinctiveness of the original. The marketplace and the motivation to make money influence the history of musical style; frequently these forces lead to simplification. Technological developments both influence and are driven by musical developments. Music can be analyzed by isolating certain of its characteristics, including rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, dynamics, instrumentation, lyrics, purpose, and form. Forms vary widely but are always dependent on the use of repetition, variation, and contrast. Musical characteristics reflect the purposes of the music. This is particularly obvious in music with political or religious intent.
Here are just a few examples of relationships you might discover and argue for about musicians X and Y. (This list is not intended to limit your options, just to get you thinking.)
Superficially, X and Y seem entirely different; looking more deeply, we see that their commonalities are more significant than their differences.
Even though X and Y both wrote love songs with similar texts, the music backing the lyrics results in uplifting songs from X and depressing songs from Y.
Even though X and Y were born within a year of one another, the circumstances of their lives caused radical differences in the kinds of music they made.
X and Y, born within a year of one another, invested their talents in different styles of music, but their artistic development took parallel paths.
You might ask yourself: What position does each musician occupy in the history of his or her style? (Early pioneer? Genre-blending with an unlikely partner? Full realization of what earlier musicians hinted at?) Is it the same or different?

Select one short-term executable project supported by the Gemba and data collection.
Create a 1- to 2-page SBAR Proposal.

Research and provide the following information in your SBAR:
Situation – Describe the current situation. Do not include any analysis of what is wrong, or any potential solutions. Simply describe what is happening.
Background – Include any relevant information, as well as any recent history that is important. How long has the current situation existed? Have there been any attempts to make changes?
Assessment – Identify the exact problem to be solved. It may have several causes, which should also be identified. Estimate the financial impact the problem has on the organization. For example, a poorly designed process may waste about $1,000 each month.
Recommendation – Describe the actions you think should be taken to resolve the problem you identified. You should solve the exact problem you identified in the Assessment section. Include specifics such as the total cost, the time needed, who will be involved, and a realistic estimate of the benefits. Use specific numbers for the solution that can be compared to the numbers in the Assessment.
Note: Be mindful of the proper protocols required to submit SBARs at your place of employment. Be sure to follow up with your employer to ensure that your SBAR has been received.
