Activity 4 Read and Open Respond
Four Children –
These descriptions are of four children of varying physical appearance, family circumstances, and behavioral characteristics. Please read and then respond to the questions at the bottom of the page.
Mike is a young 2 year old with five older siblings. His mother is a single parent. He comes to school dressed in threadbare clothes. He is small for his age and has not yet started to talk at school. When he arrives in the morning he lies down in the book area and sucks his thumb and quite often falls asleep as the other children arrive.
Mike rarely uses toys but instead clutches his blanket and watches the other children. If any adult (even a visitor) sits near him Mike will sit down in the adult’s lap. He eats voraciously and will empty the serving bowls at the lunch table before others eat if a teacher is not present.
Tiare is a 3-year-old girl. Her parents are divorced and she lives with her father. She is an extremely verbal child who speaks in an adult-like way. She appears to be beginning to read. Tiare is very affectionate with teachers and also with other children.
She has special hiding places where she goes and pretends to be an animal or princess. Sometimes she will only meow for an hour at a time if she is being a cat. Tiare delights in swinging on the tire swing.
Leroy is a 5 year old. He is very large for his age and is often mistaken for a 7 year old. His mother is also very large and can be quite brusque. She is a single parent who is fiercely proud of her son.
Despite his intimidating size Leroy is a gentle and affectionate boy who is easily led by the other children and whose feelings are easily hurt. Leroy has only recently started to show much interest in books and “school” things like sitting at circle and group discussions.
Kristin is 4 years old. In her traditional family dad works and mom stays home. Kristin’s parents send her to school in the mornings. She is petite with longhair, always clean and dressed in coordinated outfits with matching barrettes. Sometimes she comes to school wearing her mother’s makeup. She follows and talks to a teacher and only interacts with one other child, Wendy.
They never fight or argue but Wendy often tells Kristin what to do, and Kristin always does what Wendy says. Her favorite activity is to sit in the writing center and draw rainbows, stars, and flowers and her pictures always look the same.
Discuss what feelings these stories brought to you.
How would you respond to these children?

You are not offering personal or historical commentary, commentary on the writer/speaker, or responding to the ideas in the argument; you are onlyevaluating the argument itself in rhetorical terms. This is an opportunity for us to learn from other writers/speakers’ approaches to posing an argument.

The essay should also contain citations and a works cited page based on your selected reading from the assigned list–no need to use outside or additional sources other than the piece you’re analyzing.

Prior to beginning work on the Final Paper, read Steven Strauss article, The Connection Between Education, Income Inequality, and Unemployment (Links to an external site.). In your Final Paper, you should address the following based on the information presented in the article and other research:
Describe how a country can measure its income inequality.
Evaluate the effect of income inequality on the U.S. economy, such as unemployment, economic growth, and other economic factors.
Estimate the gap between those who hold bachelors and higher (master or doctoral) degrees and those who do not.
Explain reasons why the inequality gap between educated and less-educated workers has been widening.
Evaluate whether increasing opportunities for higher education can reduce income inequality.
Analyze what else causes U.S. income inequality to widen.
Recommend how to reduce educationally based income inequality or other factors if you were a federal policy maker.

Instructions
You should have identified, developed, and refined your skills as a graduate-level learner in this course. This assignment serves as a reflection of what you learned during this course and helps you to develop your vision further for future learning and growth. The reflective practice of your own learning will serve you well as you move closer to becoming an independent scholarly writer and researcher.
Research shows that your prior school experiences as a student influence your views of learning and the types of skills and habits you develop that help or hinder your learning ability. Therefore, reflecting on your K-12 and/or college educational experiences will help you become more aware of your strengths and skills to-date, as well as your perceived challenges and skills you need further developed.
First, think about your earlier (K-12) educational experience. Reflect upon ways you were treated; injustices; or positive experiences with teachers, peers, or administrationanything you feel that has affected your current outlook on learning and may cause an emotional reaction. For instance, where you criticized harshly once in an assignment and that criticism still affects your ability to use constructive criticism now to improve your learning? This should be an introspective summary/reflection on your memories of learning across your educational experiences that involve all of the topics in this course (e.g., time management, writing/grammar/APA, etc.).
Then, the second part of this assignment is to review how and what you learned/are learning currently. This reflection should include your current experiences and how you make sure you are an active agent in your learning process (e.g., did you read all of the suggested material? Did you seek help when needed? Did you learn from the assignments and try to use the strategies in your learning? Did you read review comments and incorporate them into the subsequent assignments? Etc.).
Make sure your reflection paper includes what you learned from each assignment (make sure to include the professors feedback, resources from the course, and your work) and what skills you feel you still need to work on. Organize this paper by week with headings such as Week 1, Week 2, etc. For each week, your reflection must consist of the following information (every week does not need to answer all of the questions, but collectively all of the questions must be answered):
When was a time that you felt you developed ineffective study habits/learning skills (such as watching TV while studying)? Why? How does this affect your current growth as a graduate-level learner?
How often during the day did/do you spend doing activities that were unproductive or a waste of time and hindered your learning (e.g., watching TV, social media, video games, etc.)?
What strengths (including writing, APA, research/library skills, and learning strategies) have you developed throughout your schooling to be successful in your educational experiences? How did you learn these strategies? Did someone mentor you? Was that mentoring experience positive or negative? Was there ever a time when these strategies were not successful? What did you do?
What challenges or difficulties have you faced in your education so far? Why do you think they were challenges? What was the outcome? Did you overcome the challenges? Did you figure it out on your own or did someone guide you?
Were you ever taught or mentored on specific strategies for learning, such as time management? APA? Scholarly writing? Research skills? How has this affected your graduate work?
In a separate paragraph after your responses organized by week, summarize each learning outcome for this course (e.g., time management) and indicate what you learned from it, and what you still need to improve.
Identify the three most valuable pieces of information you learned during this course and how it will help you to succeed in your program.

The U.S. Constitution stipulates that Electors will vote for the office of President and Vice President, what we commonly refer to as the Electoral College. Two times in the 21st century the candidate with the most popular votes across the United States has not won the most votes in the Electoral College, hence losing the election. Some activists and scholars are arguing that a democratic system of government requires that majority rules; therefore, the candidate for President who receives the most popular votes should win the election. Further, there is a proposal to bypass the Electoral College without having to amend the Constitution (which is basically impossible).
