Instructions
Respond to one of the prompts below in an essay of about 3 pages. Your essay should offer an original, argumentative thesis statement that directly responds to the prompt and develops that argument using specific evidence from the text(s). In other words, your paper should be grounded in close analysis of key passages from the text with attention to both thematic content and formal literary elements (language, character, plot, setting, symbolism, point of view, etc.). Your paper will be graded on the strength of your argument, your engagement with the text through close reading and analysis, and the clarity and organization of your writing.
1) Early in John Okadas No-No Boy, Ichiro Yamada observes [W]hen one is born in America and learning to love it more and more every day without thinking it, it is not an easy thing to discover suddenly that being American is a terribly incomplete thing if ones face is not white and ones parents are Japanese of the country Japan which attacked America (49). How does No-No Boyexplore the contradictions of citizenship for Japanese Americans during and after World War II? What does Ichiro mean when he says that citizenship is a terribly incomplete thing for Japanese Americans and other communities of color? How is this theme developed throughout the novel?
2) In Mohsin Hamids The Reluctant Fundamentalist, the narrator Changez reflects on his return to Pakistan from the United States: There are adjustments one must make if one comes here from America; a different way of observing is required. I recall the Americanness of my own gaze when I returned to Lahore that winter when war was in the offing (124). Why is an adjustment of his gaze so necessary for Changez when he returns to Lahore? How does this notion of adjusting ones gaze relate to your understanding of the narrative voice presented in the novel?
Note: You may use your discussion of Okada and Hamids texts from the Canvas discussion board as a starting point, but your analysis should be expanded upon and deepened for this assignment. No outside research is necessary but you may cite any materials from our syllabus if they help you craft your argument.
