Quality Management and SMS

Introduction
It seems fairly obvious to state that products of a higher quality are better than those of lower quality. But does the use of quality materials increase safety as well? A knife made of higher grade steel that will stay sharper longer may not be in and of itself any “safer” than a low quality, dull knife. Often it is the use of the tool that makes it more or less safe. So how is it that quality management can be used to increase safety?
Instructions
In 300-500 words explain how principles of quality control could be used to increase safety. Provide at least one concrete example. Your example can come from any perspective; airline, airport, dispatch, ATC, etc, either from your own experience or something you’ve read.
Grading
This assignment is worth 25 points according to the following rubric:
10 Points – Provide a description of at least one concrete example.
10 Points – Provide a clear explanation of how the principles of quality control are being applied to safety in your example.
5 Points – Your response is well written and free of any significant grammatical or spelling errors.
Submission
Your assignment should be submitted in Word or PDF format.

Safety Presentation Scenario

Overview
This is a scenario-based assignment that requires you to prepare a recorded slide presentation using Kaltura Capture. ATC is responsible for air traffic separation and sequencing of aircraft for departure, en route, approach, landing, and on the movement area of an airport. Inadequate sequencing and separation can have many safety implications.
Instructions
For this scenario, you are an air traffic controller that has been asked by the FAA to give a short public presentation regarding the safety implications of air traffic separation.
Complete this assignment by posting your slide presentation video by Thursday. All submissions must be original and unique unless you are citing a direct quote. Slide presentation must include references in APA format. See below for information on APA requirements.
Complete this assignment by doing the following:
1. Watch the following video:

2. Research and review rules and regulations for air traffic separation for TRACON – Terminal Radar Approach Control.
3. Create a slide presentation using PowerPoint, Google Slides, or a similar format that includes the following:
Discuss the rules of how ATC separates traffic both vertically and horizontally.
Discuss the reasons why the loss of separation can occur in busy terminal areas and the safety implications of air traffic separation.
Research and discuss current and future separation procedures, rules & regulations, and technology to increase the safety of air traffic separation and mitigate the loss of separation.
4. Post a video presentation of your findings using Google or PowerPoint slides and Kaltura Capture by Thursday. Your video should be a minimum of 5 minutes.
GRADING
Guidelines for Presentation and Kaltura Capture Video
Use Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT), Google Slides, or something similar
Slides must cover the information for the topic as listed under the instructions
Your slide presentation should include one slide for references
Use two credible internet sources, in addition to your textbook
Video needs to be a minimum of 5 minutes using Kaltura Capture – you will need to share your screen to show your PPT or use a voiceover PowerPoint.

SPSS Report

Interpreting your Outputs. This is to be typed on a separate page.
For all 70 participants
1. Create an APA-stype table that describes the mean, median, and standard deviation for the continuing and returning students separately.
2. Using the histograms and the descriptive table you just created, assess whether your Scores variable is symmetrically distributed or not. Assess the shape of the distribution for each age group separately (including the outliers). Use at least two of the criteria listed in Practice 2. Use qualifying terms, such as moderately skewed, or generally normal.
3. Using the table you created, compare the two groups using means. Who did better on the statistics exam–the returning or continuing students? Refer to the bar graph. The way we do that in APA style is to write our description and then in parentheses say something like (See Figure 1). If you are using SPSS, you can copy your graph right into your report by choosing Copy Special and Image, then pasting into your document (select Paste from the Edit menu in most word-processing programs). In earlier versions Copy usually works to do the same. Be sure to add a figure caption below the graphs.
4. Then compare the two groups using medians. Do you come to the same conclusion as you did when you compared the means?
5. Finally compare the two groups standard deviations. What do you conclude about the standard deviations of the two groups?
Comparing all 70 participants to sample with outliers removed
6. Create a descriptive table comparable to the one you did in #2.
7. What happens to the means when you remove outliers? Include the two-age bar graph for the sample with deleted outliers. How should you interpret those changes?
8. What happened to the medians when you removed outliers? Was the effect the same or different as with means?
9. What happens to standard deviations when you remove outliers? How should you interpret those changes?
10. What are the pros (answers 8-10) and cons of eliminating outliers?
Write your answers to these 10 questions in a section labeled Analysis.

The relationship between happiness and psychological health

Answer these questions based on the book, “The How of Happiness” by Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky. Say all responses in your own words – No quotes are allowed (even if properly cited)

Understanding happiness:
1.According to the author, what is happiness and how is it attained? (Please cite your sources).
2.In chapter 2, the author asks the reader to assess him or herself. In what ways are judgments of happiness made? That is, how does one assess his or her happiness levels? Are these methods valid?
3.In making judgments about your own happiness, where are you on that continuum and where are your friends and family?
4.What are some happiness myths described by the author? Why does she consider these myths?
5.What is meant by hedonic adaptation, and how does that fit in with the study of happiness?
6.What is the happiness set point, and what research supports this idea? Is there refuting evidence?
7.Are people predisposed to experience a certain level of happiness? Is that the same thing as saying our happiness level is determined? Why or why not?
8.When discussing the promise of intentional activity, the author discusses the possibility of increasing ones happiness. What are her conclusions, and what evidence does she have for holding such conclusions?

Relating these ideas to your life
9.Take one of the given assessments on happiness, and then describe the results regarding your level of happiness (please describe the scale that you used). Now, assess your closest friend. Are you similar or different?
10.Now take the Person-Fit Activity Diagnostic? That is, after taking this assessment, what were your four happiness activities? Then, give this assessment to your closest friend. Were the results similar to your own? What conclusions do you draw from comparing your scores?
11.What are the 12 happiness activities mentioned by Dr. Lyubomirsky? How do these activities improve ones happiness. Please be specific. In what ways do these apply to your life?
12.For a period of one week, focus on two happiness activities and engage in behaviors suggested by the author. Please describe your experiences over the week (cognitions, emotions, behaviorsplease address each of these in turn). Did these activities help you? Why or why not?
13.What are the five ways to achieve sustainable happiness? Which of these do you practice. Please describe.
14.How might the strategies and activities suggested by Dr. Lyubomirksy affect individuals who are depressed (please thoroughly read the Postscript: pg. 285). What does she say causes depression and what are the most hopeful treatments, according to the author?
