What does she accuse the Americans of doing, and why does she ultimately decide to abdicate the throne?

Actions
In this reading packet, you will see documents from a wide range of sources, including the American Anti-Imperialism League, Alfred Thayer Mahans The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, and Albert J. Beveridges In Support of an American Empire. These documents reveal many of the impulses behind the creation of an American empire.
Remember, you need to answer at least two of the following questions, and then reply to at least three of your classmates responses. For more information, revisit the “Discussion Instructions” module.
Here are the questions:
The American Anti-Imperialist League called the war in the Philippines a “war against liberty” and further said that it was “disloyalty to the distinctive principles of our Government.” Are these characterization accurate? Why or why not?
How did Queen Liliuokalani characterize America’s hostile takeover of Hawaii? What does she accuse the Americans of doing, and why does she ultimately decide to abdicate the throne?
Examine Alfred Thayer Mahan and Albert J. Beveridge’s statements. How are their views similar? How are their views different? Why do both men support the creation of an American empire.
Emilio Aguinaldo argues that, by violently creating an empire, the United States has “abandoned her traditions and set up a double standard of government.” Why does Aguinaldo hold this view? How would someone like Beveridge respond to such an accusation?

Discuss the impact of FMLA use and potential retaliation accusations on your operational area.

Directions
Please submit a case study approximately 2-3 double-spaced pages. Utilize 2 sources in addition to your textbook for your analysis. You must cite your sources (including your in-class text) using APA formatting. You will only need the case analysis and a reference page. No title page or abstract is needed. You should have your name in the top right-hand corner of the paper

Case
You are a Director of Nursing. A challenging HR issue has been escalated to you. One of your nurses, Thom is nearing the end of his FMLA leave. He went out on leave to take care of his mother who is terminally ill. He has now requested an additional six to eight weeks of leave. Your clinic manager’s response to Thom was that he already had 12 weeks approved but he is needed back in the clinic.

Thom has several fellow employees who are willing to donate PTO time so he can be off. Thom has also told HR he believes his manager’s denial is retaliation for his initial FMLA leave.

Lastly, HR has just been informed by Thom’s therapist that Thom is too depressed to work. He needs six to eight weeks off. Given the unit is down a nurse they are over-budget for salaries related to overtime use by nurses covering for Thom. How will you address?

Identify the key challenges and proposed solutions.
Discuss the impact of FMLA use and potential retaliation accusations on your operational area.
How do these issues impact the organization?

Address the role or lack of role of international bodies in counter-terrorism.

You can choose one of these topics:
Research Paper Topics
1. What is
counter-terrorism? What counter-terrorism methods have been successful? What
can governments do to improve counter-terrorism programs?
2. International
institutions dont matter in counter-terrorism. Just look at what happened in
Rwanda. Do you agree or disagree with this assessment? Address the role or
lack of role of international bodies in counter-terrorism.
3. What is
the role of the press in counter-terrorism? How has the press contributed to
the escalation of terrorism? How has the press contributed to counter-terrorist
activities?
4. Have
suicide attacks helped or hindered terrorist groups goals? How has the advent
of suicide attacks changed counter-terrorist strategies?

The 5 Parts of a Research
Paper
A
properly done research paper has 5 distinct parts, each of which has a distinct
function. Each part begins at the top of a new page (in longer papers the title
of each part appears in the middle of an otherwise blank page).
These
5 parts are:
I. Thesis
Statement (question), which in 1 sentence tells your reader the purpose of
the paper.
Included under this division, you provide
your background and precedentswhat led you to this particular treatment of
this particular question.
Also included are your definitions
of termsyour research is held accountable only to your definitions.
Neutralizing you biases. To begin a
research paper, you must neutralize your biases. To accomplish this, the
following 2 questions must be answered: (1) What data set (set of facts) would
I need that would cause me to change my mind; and (2) Does that data set (set
of facts) exist?
II. Literature
Review, in which you identify the pertinent literature in the field
concerning your topic. This includes: book title, author, and his/her main
argument(s). This is to show that your research question is adding something
new and significant to the current literature in the field, and that you have been
diligent to neutralize your biases.
III. Data,
which is the neutral presentation of the facts, not opinions or anecdotes,
which you have collected including supporting and opposing facts for your
thesis.
IV. Analysis.
No analysis is to appear anywhere else in the paper. This is where you compare
fact with fact (again, not opinions or anecdotes) in an orderly fashion.
Pro Con
Fact Fact
Fact Fact
Fact Fact
Etc.
V. Findings
and/or Conclusions, which are the obvious conclusions drawn from your
analysis. This is where you prove or disprove your thesis statementnot where
you continue your analysis.
This outline can be
accomplished in 5 sentences, 5 paragraphs, 5 pages, or 5 chapters if each point
is done properly.

Explain how those symbols draw meaning and do research into their representation.

The painting I would like to use is My Parents by David Hockney:
https://www.tate.org.uk/search?type=artwork&page=4

Guidelines
Choose an artwork to analyze from https://www.tate.org.uk/art (Links to an external site.) that is 2-dimensional and representational (or only slightly abstract). Do not choose an artwork previously talked about in Unit 1 lecture or from our textbook readings.
Download or screenshot the image to copy into your word document. State the image’s title, artist’s name, date created, and medium. Spend time researching your artist, artwork, and time period created. (If you are struggling to find information, choose a different work.)
Write on the following:
Complete a formal analysis of your artwork.
Choose a minimum of 2 elements and 2 principles to focus on. Be specific and talk about how these fundamental terms create understanding. Use lecture terminology and sub-terminology of these elements and principles to explain your analysis.
Then, choose one of the following to complete:
Stylistic analysis: focus on comparing your artwork to others done by your artist AND other artists/styles being used during the same time period of creation. You will need to do research.
Iconographic analysis: choose a minimum of 3 symbols to focus on. Explain how those symbols draw meaning and do research into their representation. Be specific in what they represent. Be honest when some assumption is required.
Finally, choose one of the following to complete:
Contextual analysis: focus on religious, historical, or biographic context to help explain why the artwork was created. You will need to do research.
Psychological analysis: connect the artists psychological state to what is physically present in the work. You will need to do research. (If you can’t find information about their psychological state, do not choose this bullet.)
When researching your artist/artwork, please use academic sources. Museum websites are great places to start. You can also use our library databases: https://www.bhc.edu/academics/academic-resources/library/Links to an external site. Be sure to cite all sources used to research.
