Introduction
There is a very delicate balance between the freedoms that individuals enjoy in society and the authority that governs them. Benjamin Franklin (1755) addressed this in a now-famous quote: “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
Key ethical theorists Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau considered the relationship between individuals and their governments and social institutions in terms of social contract theory. This suggests that a person’s ethical and political responsibilities are based on understood agreements (with government, with social institutions, with each other) that shape society. He states: “I could feel the word gayor maybe the words conspicuous absencevibrating in the air between us.” What do you think that Saeed means by this? How/why do you think that he and his mom couldn’t actually speak the word out loud?
2. On pages 19-25, the narrator (Saeed Jones) describes the way he was treated by his grandmother and others at his grandmother’s Evangelical Christian church. In what ways is Saeed made to feel shame and judgement? How is this related both to his sexual orientation and his religion?
3. On page 27, the narrator (Saeed Jones) writes: “You never forget your first ‘faggot.’ Because the memory, in its way, makes you. It becomes a spine for the body of anxieties and insecurities that will follow, something to hang all that meat on.” What do you think that Saeed means when he says that hearing this homophobic insult actually “makes” him? (remember to look for context clues in other parts of the text near this quote). What do you think is so tragic about that?
4. On page 29, the narrator (Saeed Jones) writes :
“Being black can get you killed.
Being gay can get you killed.
Being a black gay boy is a death wish.
And one day, if youre lucky, your life and death will become some artists new ‘project.’ ”
How does this quote illustrate intersectionality, the term that I discussed in my lecture for this week? What do you think Saeed means in that last line of his statement, that his life will become part of art if he’s lucky? (remember to look for context clues in other parts of the text near this quote).
5. On page 30 the narrator (Saeed Jones) talks about how the girls in his high school class responded to hearing the tragic story of Matthew Shepard, a gay man who was brutally murdered, versus how the boys responded. Why do you think that the boys responded differently? In what ways does this part of the text illustrate how men are socialized (conditioned/influenced from birth) to think about gayness? How does this passage also illustrate conceptions and pressures that black men face in order to appear “masculine”? How/why do you think those pressures contribute to homophobia amongst black men?
6. On page 44, the narrator (Saeed Jones) describes a time when he went to Dallas and experienced what it is like to finally be in a place where being gay is acceptable. He writes: “All I needed to do was look around and see that gay people here didnt appear to be scared, ashamed, hiding, or dying.” How is this space different from the spaces that Saeed lived in before going to Dallas? What do you think Saeed is trying to say here about the important of LGBTQ positive communities and spaces? In particular, why does Saeed mention that he is surprised to see that gay men here are not dying? (recall Saeed’s earliest exposure to gay literature and what was emphasized in those texts at the library).

AGAIN; it is very important that the introductory paragraph is done well. The THESIS is very important so that the rest of the essay follows well.

As you have learned, ethics is challenging for all of us, in the workplace and in our personal lives. Part of the challenge comes from the fact that our society has become so complex. A few decades ago, life was far simpler than it is now: work, for example, was often a 9-to-5, Monday through Friday job in a particular setting. Now, for many people, work is far more flexible, often done outside of traditional business hours and sometimes through virtual means. And think of entertainment: Just a generation ago, most entertainment was done through face-to-face interaction (going to the movies, playing card games or video games at a friend’s house). Now, we have nearly unlimited options for entertainment, even virtual reality gaming with people we have never met, even someone in a different hemisphere!
This complexity, while it makes life interesting, also impacts ethics. The more accelerated the development and changes in our society, the more complex that ethical dilemmas become. What seems right to you may seem wrong to another. Additionally, one academic or professional discipline can influence ethical behavior in another discipline. In this assessment, you will consider a complex contemporary issue and describe how the issue is influenced by different disciplines. You will consider at least two distinct ethical positions on the issue and defend your own position.

Overview
As the producer and correspondent of a television or radio news magazine (like 60 Minutes, VICE News, or All Things Considered), you have been assigned to deliver an informative 12-minute segment on one of the contemporary issues you and your classmates have been discussing during the past three weeks. Corporate policy requires that you consider insights from two or more academic disciplines for example: nursing and social work, or philosophical ethics, psychology, and biology.
