Prompt (Choose One):
1. Evaluate the similarities and differences in the European colonization of the Americas by the Spanish, English, and French in North America before 1760.
2. Explain how centering the Native American experience in North America before 1760- instead of the European colonists’ experience- would alter how historians view the colonial era.

Format:
1000 words
Double space
12-point font
Standard written English
One-inch margins
Chicago style footnote citations. Do not cite in MLA style.
Content:
Your paper must have a main idea/thesis/argument. It cannot be a summary of the reading. Your thesis must answer the prompt.
Your paper must be carefully edited. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling count.
Cultivate your own voice/style. You will be writing a lot of papers in college, so find your voice. This means papers by different students on the same prompt should be distinct. It does not mean the papers are about you. Do not write about yourself and do not use a conversational tone or self-references.
You must demonstrate understanding and familiarity with June 7-15 course readings: Brinkley’s Unfinished Nation, Ch 1-5 and the assigned articles in American Perspectives. You must use evidence from both books or your paper will not pass.
These are reading response essays, not research papers. There should be no other source material beyond Brinkley’s Unfinished Nation and the articles from American Perspectives; do not summarize content you have read on the internet.
A paper with no citations is an F paper.

Grading:
Meet the format requirements
Have thoughtful content including a clear answer to the prompt
Write clearly and edit your work
A papers do these three tasks strongly, B papers may be weak in one area, C papers may be weak in two areas, D papers may be weak in three areas, etc.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the theft of words or ideas from another writer and dishonestly passing them off as your own. Any plagiarism- even a few sentences or a single paragraph- will result in a ZERO on the paper. Do not be tempted to submit work you did not create. Two episodes of plagiarism in the course will result in an F in the course and a referral to HCCs academic disciplinary review committee via Maxient.

Leopolds Extraction in the Belgian Congo Outline

The paper is required to use the following outline and structure:

Introduction Section (Discussion of Issue Selected)

Explanation of Ethical or Moral Issues

Connections with Global Economic and/or Historical Issues

Legacy of the Issue

Self-Reflection on Assignment

Conclusion
i have already done the intro paragraph as well
In one short paragraph, please explain what issue you have selected for your term paper. Why is your research paper important? What will you learn, and how will this assignment support your education at Mount Saint Marys?
Leopolds Extraction in the Belgian Congo
The economic issue that I selected for the term paper is Leopolds Extraction in the Belgian Congo, which occurred around the late 1800s. During this time, King Leopold II initiated the Belgian colonization in Congo and established the Congo Free State. This event was atrocious as brutal practices, such as inhumane policies, were implemented during his reign. Rubber was a valuable resource in Congo and in order to extract it, forced labor was often used. Moreover, the extraction of rubber was a scandalous economic event in history because it took the lives of millions and prevented further economic growth in the country, which is significant today. The majority of profits went to the Belgian colonists and left the natives at a great disadvantage; they were exploited and used. This topic is important to discuss because it explains the background of Congo and how its past leadership has affected its economy. It discusses the topic of extractive institutions and how they work to benefit the elite at the expense of the many, as we read throughout the modules in class. Furthermore, I will learn how colonialism in Africa has affected its current economic standing and how Leopolds Extraction has affected the country in the long-run. This assignment will further support my education at Mount Saint Marys because I will be able to learn about various economies worldwide, how they have functioned overtime, and how it has left permanent and everlasting effects on its people.
