Restricted Topic
Essay: Pick a topic from this semester,
RESTRICTIONS to follow:
Restrict the topic to the Baase & Henry text, describing the technology AND citing the Baase & Henry source in APA format). The topic that you pick is to be related to some Technological Innovation that has had a marked impact on society or culture in the United States and at least one other country outside of North America.
You will compare and contrast how this innovation has affected society or culture in North America and how it has affected society or culture in at least one other country outside of North America.
This technological innovation must have been invented or become popular since 1990. (So, fairly current!)
Your research will be based (citations and reference required) on the Baase and Henry text AND additional research into the topic to be supported by at least two additional reputable sources.
See the note on what is reputable and not reputable down below under REQUIREMENTS.
The minimum word count is 1200 words, not including the cover page, abstract (as the abstract is NOT REQUIRED), and the references page.
See the reduction of points chart for word counts not reaching 1200 words.
I would prefer that you use your own words (You still need to cite and include your references when paraphrasing.)
There are reductions in word count for excessive quotations (over 10%). Remember that if you use information from a source, you must cite your source and include references, even if you paraphrase.
If you include a statistic, information about a topic that is generally not known, or a quote, or paraphrase information from a source, you must cite a source and include the reference.
IF you know the statistic (didn’t make it up because you had heard it somewhere before), you must find a reputable source to cite and reference.
For example, I can’t say Facebook has the most number of users. I would need to support my claim, cite it, and reference the source. (Yes, I know that this is no longer true!)
This essay will be completed using APA format. I do not require the Abstract and therefore, will not count it towards the wordcount.
EXAMPLES (Keep in mind, these ideas must include its use in the U.S. and at least one other country outside of North America.): A technological innovation in the meaning of this assignment could be a system encompassing hardware and software (like smart phones and the changes smart phones have made on society), gaming systems that include facial recognition and its implications, current surveillance systems (could be a paper on location tracking during COVID-19), current malware, current computer vulnerabilities enticing groups to hack for cash or bitcoin, OR a program like Facebook or Instagram TikTok and consequences of using such social networking systems, encryption tools, current methods to keep your identity private (could be legal battles or a paper on the issues related to the Ring Doorbell), etc. How has your topic impacted the culture or society in the United States and at least one other country outside of the United States?
Now, pick a technological topic from the Baase & Henry text and do more research on the topic for your project 9 (make sure the topic meets the requirements! If you have a question whether your topic meets the requirements, ASK!
Requirements:
Please read through this whole document. It includes things like restrictions and point values.
Minimum Number of Sources: Using APA format, you are to use at least 3 resources for this essay. The Baase and Henry book will be the driving source. You will introduce your topic using the Baase and Henry book, including citations. Then, you will find more information about your topic using at least 2 more reputable sources to support your topic’s research.
Cite your sources: Even if you paraphrase (see project 1 for an example). Do not assume that you can include information in your essay from sources and not cite them or include the references in your References list. Also, you may not use a paper previously submitted in another course. This is an example of an unpublished manuscript. Including information from the previous paper is OK if you cite your paper and use it as a reference like any other reference! See https://emich.policytech.com/dotNet/documents/?docid=116&public=trueLinks to an external site. for EMU’s plagiarism guidelines.
Reputable sources:
The sources, other than the book, can be found on the Internet.
Use reputable resources (journal articles, major newspaper articles, government sites, books) Beware of bias! If you suspect bias, include that in your report!
Sources that are NOT reputable:
Do NOT use: Wikipedia, Ask.com, AOL.com, not an online dictionary, do not use blogs, tweets, or personal websites. Do not conclude that these sources are reputable and will not be counted as a reputable source.
YOU CAN USE THESE in, say your introduction or “hearsay” reference (“he said or she said”): You may begin with a Wikipedia reference or a dictionary definition, as people often do, and include it in the references list. But these will not count these as reputable sources toward your 2 additional references. Do not use these to support any claim you may have within your paper.
CAN I use one or more of these sources that are NOT REPUTABLE?
YES! You MAY use one of these other sources, but the will not count toward the three required sources. (see grading guide to see how many points each additional reputable source is worth!)
For example: You may quote a definition from webster.com, or a blogger’s opinion. The words you write would be counted! And, you will still need to cite and include the reference in the References list. However, do not assume that these sources that are not reputable will be counted towards the two “outside” reputable sources.
Is there a limit on the number of quoted words you can use?
YES! There is a maximum number of quoted words. The limit is 10%, or 120 words. I will deduct any over 120 and subtract this number from your word count. It may work against you!
I would prefer that you use your own words! Paraphrase, but still cite your sources!
File Format: APA, Microsoft Word.doc only
Paper Format: APA (See APA Project and online resources for formatting details when citing your sources and formatting your document.)
Length: At least 1200 words, not including the headers, the cover page and references page.
Your paper must be at least 1200 words in length not counting the cover sheet, the references page, appendix if any, charts are OK as illustrations, but images are not to be included in the body of your document. If you include an image or other document, it will be included in an Appendix that follows your references page and be labeled appropriately.)
The 1200 word count does not include the cover page, an abstract if one is included (not required for this assignment) or References page. Charts, tables, drawings, and images, if any, are to be referenced from within the document and are to be included after the References pages as Appendix I, Appendix II, Appendix III, etc., each on its own page. These are optional. Ask me for guidelines if you will be using these.
At most 10%, or 120 words, of the paper may be direct quotes (properly cited and referenced, of course). If more than 120 words are directly quoted, then the paper’s word count will be reduced by the number of words that exceeds 120 words. You may paraphrase, but you are still required to include proper citations and references for the information belonging to another. Cite your sources. Give credit where credit is due!
Margins: 1 inch margins on all sides. The header has a setting of .5 from the top of the page.
Header: See Project 1 for details. The right side of the margin include the page number at the 1/5 inch margin and must be in the header, not in the document. There are no extra blank lines in the header. This would push your top margin down the page.
Font: Times or Times New Roman font throughout (including the headers). 12-point type throughout.
Coversheet: The coversheet (see project 1 for coversheet requirements).
Check for spelling and grammatical errors. Proofread and spell-check your essay.
Spacing: The entire document is to be double-spaced. There are to be NO extra blank lines OR “PADDED” paragraphs above or below paragraphs OR above or below titles (I know it looks better to add that extra blank line, but that isn’t APA.)
In Microsoft Word: Check your Format>>Paragraph settings to make sure that your paragraph settings are set to zero before and after your paragraphs.
Guidelines for formatting citations: The guidelines are included in the APA Manual, sixth edition, as well as some sites online. I will reference the Purdue Owl APA site but will include specific thing not used there as in: I will require paragraph numbers from Web pages and page numbers from book. A book example would be: According to Baase and Henry, “We would not give back the gift of fire” (2018, p. 36). An online example would be: According to Bahorski, “do double-check that your file has been successfully uploaded to the Drop box” (2014, para. 6). Even if you paraphrase, you still need to cite and reference the source information. I will use the same example as above. Although the gods gave us the gift of fire, no one today would return it to them (Baase & Henry, 2018, p. 36).
If in doubt: Ask.
This might help you write this paper. What to include in this paper:
The Essay Body:
You will include a thesis statement in your introductory paragraph that will be the basis of your essay. And, based on that thesis statement, you will write your essay.
The topic Questions to answer in your report:
What is the innovative technological topic (why is it revolutionary and not ordinary)?
You may include its history in the countries you have selected.
How has it impacted these societies? Who has it impacted (example: old more than young; young more than old; specific profession; humanity as a whole)?
Some other questions that are appropriate for this type of paper and of which we had been discussing throughout the semester:
What are some unintended consequences of the technology (what current uses or future uses were not “built-in” or designed to be a part of the original system but evolved to become a use of the system now)?
What are some legal implications that have resulted from the use of this technology in the countries you are covering?
Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or do the disadvantages outweigh the advantages? Should this affect the use of this technology? What should we do now?
What do you see as the future of this technology? (What progression do you see happening in the future? For example: Will we still find a need for this? How will this morph into new technologies?) (This can be included as part of your summary.)
More Examples:
The Internet was opened to the masses by President George H. Bush in 1992 when it was signed into U.S. law. E-commerce now facilitates buying goods overseas as easily as in the next state –for example, students find that buying textbooks in other countries is sometimes less expensive, bringing up other legal issues.
Global citizen-scientists invited to participate in research of data presented in real-time video feeds leading to new discoveries. A boy in Russia caught on video a female North American elephant seal feeding at a level not previously recorded.
Submission of Essay Due: Check Class Calendar for date. UPLOAD a the .doc file to the Drop box. Double-check that it has been successfully uploaded.
Point Value: 100 points
See https://emich.policytech.com/dotNet/documents/?docid=116&public=trueLinks to an external site. for EMU’s plagiarism guidelines.
Your essay will be in the standard APA format: (See Paper format below)
1) Your opening paragraph includes your introduction and points to cover and also includes your thesis statement.
2) The body of the essay will elaborate each point of the points in your introduction culminating with your weighing the strengths and weaknesses of the technology. Include an assessment of the risks: Determine whether the technology is inherently evil or whether the strengths of the technology outweigh the negative aspects (In other words, do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?)
3) Conclude your essay with your summary.
You will upload your final document to your EMU-Online drop box. This report will be submitted in as a Microsoft Word.doc format document only.
Rubric (Grading Scale):
Microsoft Word Final Report Rubric: 100 points –
To receive credit, the Microsoft Word document must be restricted to a topic found and referenced from the Baase and Henry text, include additional original research, and be successfully uploaded to EMU-Online in the Drop box by the deadline.
No late credit will be given.
Your paper must be at least 1200 words in length not counting the cover sheet, the references page, appendix if any (images are not to be included in the body of your document. If you include an image or other document, it will be included in an appendix that follows your references page and be labeled appropriately.)
Loss of 10% of the 100 points for each block of 120 words for a 10 point per 120 word reduction. So if your paper has 1199 words, it will be reduced by 10% automatically. If the paper has 959 words, it will be reduced by 20%, etc.

Explication of a single poem
Choose one poem below :
“To the Lady” by Mitsuye Yamada
“Moving Camp Too Far” by nila northSun
“I Ask My Mother to Sing” by Li-Young Lee
and write a 5-6 page explication essay about it.
Below is the instructions from the teacher herself.
Explication reveals through thoughtful commentary (generally line-by-line) your understanding of the meaning of the work and its structure. Explication is not a summary of the text, rather it discusses the purpose and effect of the language, theme, tone, structure/form, diction, or figurative language toward the overall meaning/message.
Your thesis when writing an explication may be your claim about:
what the poem means, or
what impact of the various elements has on the reader, or
what message the poet is trying to convey
Your essay will support that claim through an explication—a discussion of how the elements of the poem support that claim.
If you are interested in responding to this prompt, read ahead: “Student Writing Portfolio: Explication Paper” Download “Student Writing Portfolio: Explication Paper” (also on pages 785-806 in LFC)
Example thesis: In his poem “Election Day, November, 1884,” Whitman argues that the greatest of all of our national treasures is our ability to vote.

The negative impact of the Internet on China’s youth(Titles may be changed as appropriate to meet course requirements and marking criteria)
This is an assignment to revise an essay. It is the only opportunity to make up for the exam. I need you to rework it based on the feedback and assignment requirements given to me by the teacher. It needs to be revised to fully meet the standard and excellence of the assignment. The assignment requires a total word count of at least 3700 words (including the literature list). But I have very limited time. And there is only one chance to revise. If I don’t pass this one time, I will have no chance. I hope you can help me to find the most professional pedagogical worker. Read the assignment requirements and my original paper carefully and carefully. The most important thing is to revise it in conjunction with the assignment requirements and the comments given to me by my teacher (the comments are at the bottom of the form page)
