NURSE THEORY CASE STUDY

APPLICATION OF SELECTED THEORY TO PRACTICE (Case Study)

Hildegard Peplau: Interpersonal Relations Theory

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate the application of a nursing theory/model to practice. The case study should be about a patient you have cared for or can be a fictitious patient you can make up (much easier if it is a real example).
ASSIGNMENT
1. You will choose a theory to apply to your case study. It should be a different theory than the one you chose for your personal philosophy paper or your group project.
2. The preference is for a middle-range theory.
• Your paper should begin with an introductory paragraph not an abstract. (This should give a brief overview of your discussion of the theory and makes the reader want to continue to read.)
• You must briefly explain the theory including key concepts and definitions.
• You then need to walk through your case study (patient example) and apply your chosen theory to the concepts of the nursing process (especially focus on assessment and interventions).
• Explain and use examples of how the theory guides those phases of the nursing process.
• You will need to end with an evaluation of the applicability of the theory to practice.
3. This paper needs 3 references, one being a peer-reviewed journal article.
4. The body of your paper should be 5 pages and include a title page (1 page) and
reference list (1 page). However, the final count for the paper is 7 pages.

Country Case Study Presentation-India

Speech Community/Country Case Study

Presentation

Assignment Description

You will select one case study of an international speech community. You will investigate the history and current sociopolitical context of this group, with particular attention tolanguage ideologies and language policies that shape the experiences of this group in a particular nation-state. You will become “the expert(s)” of this speech community, crafting a presentation meant to share your knowledge and to facilitate a discussion & analysis of the language status & policies of this speech community.

**This project is designed to be completed individually; however, if you have colleagues in class and would like to collaborate on this assignment, please let me know ASAP so we can discuss how to divide work.

Guiding Questions:

What is the chosen speech community you are researching and presenting?
Where does this speech community exist (and if in more than one country, which country context will your group be discussing)?
What is the history of this speech community in this country?
Does it pre-date nationhood (e.g.: indigenous groups, local minority languages) or is it a more recent arrival?
What has the status of this speech community and its language been over time? (i.e.: Historically marginalized but gaining rights and recognition, always marginalized, formerly high status but now receding)
What is the current status of this speech community in this country?
What are prevalent current attitudes, especially within circles of power, towards this group and its language?
To what extent are the group and its language given access or even promoted in politics/governance, education, and cultural participation? (Mention specific policies and programs in place that support or hinder inclusion in society).

The assignment is worth 30 points and is broken down into three parts:

Annotated Bibliography (10 points)
Presentation (20 points): The presentation must address the above guiding questions and adhere to the guidelines in the rubric below. The idea is that you are the expert(s) and are teaching us about your speech community, its history and status. Slides are due on Canvas on April 13th at 11:59pm.

An important note on plagiarism/using information from the internet:

I expect that all the writing in your presentation is original writing based on your research. In other words, it is not acceptable to copy/paste information from the internet directly onto your presentation. You are welcome to use direct quotes from some of your sources, however, these quotes must be clearly indicated and the sources should also be given (in APA7 format plus a reference page).

Some Extra Clarification/Ideas:

Country Case Study Presentation

Presentation:
Using powerpoint, prezi, or another engaging presentation format, create a 15+ minute presentation (roughly 5-8 slides) on the history of your country and its language, the language policies governing that community, challenges and complications that have occurred, the current status of the country and its language today, and any other engaging information you would like to include.
Record yourself presenting your country case study and using the slides as you present. You can use Zoom to record your presentation and upload the video to canvas.
Think about the note catcher—it includes information on schooling, politics, commercial, and culture—try and include these points/ideas in your presentation on the country and its language as a whole. This will be a great way to introduce these four ideas to preface your activity.
Consider including short videos using links to YouTube that are informative and engaging to discuss important ideas/history/etc. about your country and its language.
Audiences like a lot of pictures, color, and engaging media/ideas. Go easy on the text.
Think of ways to engage the audience in your presentation. Will you have a pop quiz on the information so they should be taking notes? (If so, warn them before you begin!). Will you ask them questions during the presentation or asking for feedback?
Include your references (APA style) as the last slide of your presentation.
Get CREATIVE!
After your presentation, provide an opportunity for questions and answers.

ASSIGNMENT & GOALS
– IMPORTANT: This is not ENC 1101. This is the next level. Putting forth just enough effort to complete the assignment and earn the minimum passing grade will not get you far. In this course, you will be expected to show your growth as a writer which includes, but is not limited to, showing empathy to your audience by catering to their needs as best as you can, producing a writing style that is both professional AND engaging so as not to lose your reader due to boredom, and actually showing that you care not only about your chosen topic but also the manner in which you present yourself on the page. Any writing that’s loose, doesn’t follow basic grammar/spelling rules, and doesn’t properly serve the audience will not score a high grade. -For this assignment, students will compose a formal essay on any topic of their choice so long as it is debatable & not widely accepted. *IMPORTANT: The topic MUST BE DEBATABLE. For example, An essay arguing for people to stop drinking and driving is a complete waste of time because no reasonable human being will argue against you. If you write an essay similar to this in any way, it WILL NOT receive a passing grade. This is non-negotiable. In terms of essay style, students can choose whichever approach they feel most comfortable writing in (Personal Essay, Exploratory Essay, Boring A, B, C Essay, etc.). I leave that choice up to you. Yes, personal experience is accepted. I also accept any sort of personal research &/or interviews. However, please understand this paper is also a research paper so you must meet the source minimum. For this final paper, the page minimum is set at FOUR AND A HALF PAGES & no less. – Respectfully, I ask that you do not attempt to manipulate the page in any way just so you can meet the minimum. Your line spacing anywhere within the document cannot be more than DOUBLE. Your margins cannot be more than ONE INCH all around. Do not begin your first page in the middle of the page. In general, don’t do anything to try and cheat the process because you will receive an incomplete grade. A sample MLA formatted essay will be posted for you to use as a visual guide. Make sure your paper looks exactly like that formatting-wise. – The support/evidence for your argument will come from credible outside sources AS WELL AS your own experiences and basic knowledge. In terms of source limits, you’ll need to include at least FIVE outside sources with a maximum of TEN. If a student fails to meet the minimum or exceeds the maximum they will be penalized for violating the terms of this assignment. At the minimum, violating the source minimum/maximum will keep you out of A-range. Also, I will be scrutinizing your sources for this final paper much stronger than in WA2. Any sources that lack credibility will result in points being taken away. ***VERY, VERY, VERY IMPORTANT (Please make sure you read. This is what we’ve been building toward the entire semester): Up until now I’ve been emphasizing things like voice, style, empathy, service to your audience, how writing to your audience is a privilege & not a right, etc. No more will I judge these ideas more closely than on this final paper. Everything we’ve been discussing and working on has led to this. When I read your final papers, I’m going to read them as the general public would. A public that’s looking to learn from you & to be moved & inspired by you. In other words, in the exact same way, YOU would read other people’s work. What does this mean? First impressions mean everything. If you lose the reader the first time, you lose them always. In other words, the average reader doesn’t enjoy reading things that are boring & fail to engage their interest/imagination. No one enjoys reading anything that feels like work. No one enjoys reading from writers who are self-righteous or who sound all high and mighty as if preaching to us “lowly” readers because they think they’re smarter than everyone else. DO NOT ASSUME THE AVERAGE READER WILL STICK AROUND TO READ THE REST OF YOUR PAPER JUST BECAUSE. YOU DON’T GET TO ASSUME THAT PRIVILEGE. IF YOU LOSE A READER’S INTEREST, YOUR PAPER HAS FAILED TO REACH ITS GOAL. IF YOUR PAPER IS BORING OR DOESN’T ADD ANYTHING NEW OR FRESH, THEY WILL LEAVE BECAUSE YOU’RE WASTING THEIR TIME. THAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE. I want to make this VERY clear because when I grade this paper, your ability to keep your audience’s attention will weigh heavily. If your final product is ultimately some non-empathetic mess that shows zero interest in what others say or thinks and doesn’t take your audience into consideration at all, you will not be happy with your final grade. This is what RHETORIC is about. It’s about serving your reader (“The art of persuasion”). Knowing how to write grammatically correct sentences or how to structure your paper properly or how to find sources & incorporate them into your paper DOES NOT make you an effective writer. You can do all those things & still write a paper that no one cares about. Give your readership purpose. Give them motivation. Give them inspiration. Make them feel grateful that they read your work. Do not sleepwalk through this paper because your final grade will reflect it. That I can promise. Simply put: WRITE THE PAPER YOURSELF WOULD WANT TO READ.
FORMATTING (Also see rubric)
You must use standard essay formatting that is appropriate to college-level writing (paragraphs, indents, transitions, introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs, conclusion, etc.). Use proper MLA style for this and all writing assignments moving forward in this class. Information on MLA style can be found within the Little Seagull Handbook and Bedford Handbook (If you have it), as well as anywhere online. Here is the link to the Purdue OWL website which is very helpful: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/13/
Links to an external site because this is a research-based essay, a Works Cited Page is required (MLA Style). Failure to provide a Works Cited will lead to a deduction of points.
You must explain your ideas in detail in order to make any clear claims.
PLAGIARISM
– Simply put, plagiarism of any kind will be penalized in accordance with the plagiarism policy found within the course syllabus (see syllabus). This policy is non-negotiable and no exceptions will be made.

Introduction
As you begin to consider the assessment, it would be an excellent choice to complete the Breach of Protected Health Information (PHI) activity. The activity will support your success with the assessment by creating the opportunity for you to test your knowledge of potential privacy, security, and confidentiality violations of protected health information. The activity is not graded and counts towards course engagement.

Health professionals today are increasingly accountable for the use of protected health information (PHI). Various government and regulatory agencies promote and support privacy and security through a variety of activities. Examples include:

Meaningful use of electronic health records (EHR).
Provision of EHR incentive programs through Medicare and Medicaid.
Enforcement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules.
Release of educational resources and tools to help providers and hospitals address privacy, security, and confidentiality risks in their practices.
Technological advances, such as the use of social media platforms and applications for patient progress tracking and communication, have provided more access to health information and improved communication between care providers and patients.

At the same time, advances such as these have resulted in more risk for protecting PHI. Nurses typically receive annual training on protecting patient information in their everyday practice. This training usually emphasizes privacy, security, and confidentiality best practices such as:

Keeping passwords secure.
Logging out of public computers.
Sharing patient information only with those directly providing care or who have been granted permission to receive this information.
Today, one of the major risks associated with privacy and confidentiality of patient identity and data relates to social media. Many nurses and other health care providers place themselves at risk when they use social media or other electronic communication systems inappropriately. For example, a Texas nurse was recently terminated for posting patient vaccination information on Facebook. In another case, a New York nurse was terminated for posting an insensitive emergency department photo on her Instagram account.

Health care providers today must develop their skills in mitigating risks to their patients and themselves related to patient information. At the same time, they need to be able distinguish between effective and ineffective uses of social media in health care.

This assessment will require you to develop a staff update for the interprofessional team to encourage team members to protect the privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient information.

Preparation
To successfully prepare to complete this assessment, complete the following:

Review the infographics on protecting PHI provided in the resources for this assessment, or find other infographics to review. These infographics serve as examples of how to succinctly summarize evidence-based information.
Analyze these infographics and distill them into five or six principles of what makes them effective. As you design your interprofessional staff update, apply these principles. Note: In a staff update, you will not have all the images and graphics that an infographic might contain. Instead, focus your analysis on what makes the messaging effective.
Select from any of the following options, or a combination of options, the focus of your interprofessional staff update:
Social media best practices.
What not to do: social media.
Social media risks to patient information.
Steps to take if a breach occurs.
Conduct independent research on the topic you have selected in addition to reviewing the suggested resources for this assessment. This information will serve as the source(s) of the information contained in your interprofessional staff update. Consult the BSN Program Library Research Guide for help in identifying scholarly and/or authoritative sources.
In this assessment, assume you are a nurse in an acute care, community, school, nursing home, or other health care setting. Before your shift begins, you scroll through Facebook and notice that a coworker has posted a photo of herself and a patient on Facebook. The post states, “I am so happy Jane is feeling better. She is just the best patient I’ve ever had, and I am excited that she is on the road to recovery.”

You have recently completed your annual continuing education requirements at work and realize this is a breach of your organization’s social media policy. Your organization requires employees to immediately report such breaches to the privacy officer to ensure the post is removed immediately and that the nurse responsible receives appropriate corrective action.

You follow appropriate organizational protocols and report the breach to the privacy officer. The privacy officer takes swift action to remove the post. Due to the severity of the breach, the organization terminates the nurse.

Based on this incident’s severity, your organization has established a task force with two main goals:

Educate staff on HIPAA and appropriate social media use in health care.
Prevent confidentiality, security, and privacy breaches.
The task force has been charged with creating a series of interprofessional staff updates on the following topics:

Social media best practices.
What not to do: Social media.
Social media risks to patient information.
Steps to take if a breach occurs.
You are asked to select one or more of the topics and create the content for a staff update containing a maximum of two content pages. This assessment is not a traditional essay. It is a staff educational update about PHI. Consider creating a flyer, pamphlet, or one PowerPoint slide (not an entire presentation). Remember it should not be more than two pages (excluding a title and a reference page).

The task force has asked team members assigned to the topics to include the following content in their updates in addition to content on their selected topics:

What is protected health information (PHI)?
Be sure to include essential HIPAA information.
What are privacy, security, and confidentiality?
Define and provide examples of privacy, security, and confidentiality concerns related to the use of technology in health care.
Explain the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to safeguard sensitive electronic health information.
What evidence relating to social media usage and PHI do interprofessional team members need to be aware of? For example:
How many nurses have been terminated for inappropriate social media use in the United States?
What types of sanctions have health care organizations imposed on interdisciplinary team members who have violated social media policies?
What have been the financial penalties assessed against health care organizations for inappropriate social media use?
What evidence-based strategies have health care organizations employed to prevent or reduce confidentiality, privacy, and security breaches, particularly related to social media usage?
Notes
Your staff update is limited to two double-spaced content pages. Be selective about the content you choose to include in your update so you can meet the page length requirement. Include need-to-know information. Omit nice-to-know information.
Many times people do not read staff updates, do not read them carefully, or do not read them to the end. Ensure your staff update piques staff members’ interest, highlights key points, and is easy to read. Avoid overcrowding the update with too much content.
Also, supply a separate reference page that includes two or three peer-reviewed and one or two non-peer-reviewed resources (for a total of 3–5 resources) to support the staff update content.
Additional Requirements
Written communication: Ensure the staff update is free from errors that detract from the overall message.
Submission length: Maximum of two double-spaced content pages.
Font and font size: Use Times New Roman, 12-point.
Citations and references: Provide a separate reference page that includes 2–3 current, peer-reviewed and 1–2 current, non-peer-reviewed in-text citations and references (total of 3–5 resources) that support the staff update’s content. Current means no older than 5 years.
APA format: Be sure your citations and references adhere to APA format. Consult the Evidence and APA page for an APA refresher.

Celia, a slave reflection paper

• What’s the argument? What key evidence is used to support it? Do you agree? What biases are reflected in the book?
• Third, explain the relevance of the book, & identify linkages between the book and lecture material/class themes
Logistics: To earn full credit, all reviews must:
• Meet the minimum assignment specifications: 3-4 pages (not including title/header), double-spaced, 12 pt font, 1 inch margins, and submitted on-time in Canvas.
• Contain writing that is original, clear, and well-organized. No first-person used.
• Must include a balance of information and analysis
• Should respond evenly to all three parts identified
