Critical Self-Reflection Paper Vital to social work practice is an understanding of the values and beliefs that one holds, particularly with regard to practice involving diverse populations. Values and belief systems are initially the product of one’s social environment through social learning, but over time, these values can change and biases can emerge or disappear. This two-part assignment requires students to be critically self-reflective in describing the development of their values, beliefs, and attitudes regarding various aspects of diversity.
The following paper consists of two parts. The first part focuses on your personal diversity. The second part focuses on how your personal diversity shapes the ways you view other cultures. Once you have completed writing part one and part two, both sections should be combined to form one paper.
Part One:
Include ways in which you believe your values and belief systems were shaped by the following factors:
· Ethnic and/or racial heritage
· Gender and sexual orientation
· Socioeconomic group
· Region of the country
· Religious/spiritual beliefs
Part One of your paper should be 3-4 pages. The cover/title Page does not count toward this page count
Part Two:
For part two, you are now going to reflect on your perceptions and attitudes toward other diversity groups that differ from your own identity. Include the kinds of messages (spoken and unspoken) you have received throughout your life about people who were different from you. Afterward, answer the following questions/prompts in detail (Part 2):
1. What are your beliefs and attitudes about diversity and difference at this point in your life?
2. Have you chosen to retain those of your upbringing or have you modified or replaced them? Why?
3. What are some biases you now have regarding groups different from yourself (those distinguished from your racial or ethnic heritage, gender, sexual orientation, abilities, income, religious/spiritual beliefs)?
4. How do those biases influence the way(s) in which you interact with members of those groups?
5. Were you particularly surprised by any of the answers to these questions? If so, which one(s) and why?
Part Two should be 3-4 pages. Once you have completed writing both parts (Part One & Part Two), they should be combined to create one paper.
Submission Guidelines
Part One and Part Two of this Critical Self-Reflection should be combined in order to create one narrative paper. After combining both parts, the paper should not exceed more than 8 pages. Cover page, references, and pictures do not count toward the 10-page limit. Please submit the final paper as one word document on Canvas under the Assignment tab by 11:59pm on Sunday, October 18th
As this paper is a self-assessment, no citations are necessary. Papers must be typewritten in APA formatting using Times New Roman 12 pt. font. The entire paper (including both Part One and Part Two) cannot exceed 8 double-spaced pages. Papers must include a cover page with the title of paper, student’s name, and name of the University (See APA manual for formatting guidelines).

Over the past few weeks, we have read various perspectives on the politics and business of
food. Some writers such as Michael Pollan concern themselves with the importance of
individual dietary choices, while others, such as Radley Balko, write about government’s
role in ensuring the health of its citizens. In some way or another, all the voices we read are
concerned for Americans’ health but have different ideas about how to best approach it.
Drawing from at least one of the authors from class and outside research, write an essay
in which you assess federal, state, and/or local government policy on obesity.
Questions to Consider
• How, if at all, should the government regulate the fast food industry?
• Would ideas like a “fat tax” or “sugar tax” be effective? Have other places tried them,
and if so, what was the result?
• What is some recent federal, state, or local legislation that has passed or been
introduced to combat obesity? Do you think it will work?
• Do you believe in giving government more control over health matters, or less?
Why?
• What other systemic or structural factors contribute to obesity?
• What role does fatphobia play in how we shape policy? What is the danger of
focusing too much on obesity at the expense of other health concerns?
Requirements
• 4-5 pages, double-spaced
• Written in essay form (intro, body, and conclusion, no walls of text)
• MLA format with correct heading, creative title, and header
• Works Cited page
• Quote from and cite at least one of the following authors: Pollan, Balko, Zinczenko,
or Maxfield. You can cite more than one if you like.
• Quote from and at least two additional sources from the MCC Library (instruction
will be given in class). You can cite more than two if you like.

Harlem Renaissance Common Thread

To wrap up our overview of the Harlem Renaissance, you will be asked to look more closely at the work of several artists from different media. A lot of the artists from this movement had similar backgrounds and experience, and those ideas found their way into their work. You will be asked to produce a Google slide presentation that addresses a unifying idea that you see running through the works of a writer, visual artist, and musician. Essentially, you are looking for a common theme that comes out, whether it is the message of a poem, the image in a painting, or the lyrics of a song.
For example, you may have a Langston Hughes poem that discusses the social inequality that the speaker experienced in America at the time, a Jacob Lawrence painting from the Migration Series that also depicts that feeling of inequality, and a Bessie Smith lyric that echoes those same feelings.
The list below, while not exhaustive, is a good sampling of the key artists that you may choose from and whose work is easily accessible online. I would also suggest doing a little exploration to find work that you enjoy, or at the very least, stands out to you in some way. Please do not select any work that we have covered as a class.

Requirements:

Slide 1: State the common theme that you have found across the three works of art. This can be worded similarly to a thesis statement, and your following slides will work to prove it.

Ex: In the works of many Harlem Renaissance artists across genres, the idea of remaining resilient in the face of injustice resurfaces in various forms.

Slide 2: Music – Slide should contain samples of the lyrics, a statement of the theme, and specific textual evidence from the song that illustrates the theme.

Slide 3: Art – The slide should contain the image of the art work as well as a detailed discussion of how that artist depicted the theme visually.

Slide 4: Literature – If reasonable, paste the complete poem on the slide; if it is longer, a representative selection of lines will be sufficient. Also, include a discussion of the poem’s key stylistic choices as well as textual evidence and how it illustrates the chosen theme.

For all slides, be sure to explain your thinking. Do not assume that I will see/read the same connections that you did!

As with all slides, consistency of design should be evident, as well as attention to aesthetic appeal – visually interesting without being excessively cluttered.

Based upon the knowledge you have gained in this course, self-reflect on your characteristics as leader and manager. Include an explanation of leadership and management. Support your choices with peer reviewed evidence (less than 7 years old or the textbook)

The “Informational Interview” is the Final Project that is due Week 14. It is an entire semester activity that requires the student start his/her research at least by the third week of the semester in order to successfully complete all aspects of the project. Attached are examples of prior student’s work that should be used as a guide. This includes various questions for the interview, PowerPoint Presentations, and written report – Log and Summary that must be submitted the same day of presentation in May. Here are the requirements to fulfill this project:
