Students will write a biographical essay about a person who died before 1985.
This essay will include a governing thesis statement that makes a debatable claim about that person, their life, or their legacy.
To accomplish this, students will:
Choose a biographical subject who died before 1985
Learn about that individual and their life through biographical research in secondary sources
Learn about that individual’s cultural and historical contexts through historical research in secondary sources
Read something written by or about the individual while they were alive through research into primary sources
Following their research, students will synthesize what they’ve learned, and develop a debatable claim about that individual, which they will then substantiate via concrete reference to specific details and claims encountered in their research.

I’m going to need a Thesis statement that is DEBATABLE and FOCUSED. Due by April 6, 2023 at 6:30 AM

The main reason this is not a pass is because 50% of the essay is essentially missing. You were asked to compare and contrast an insider and an outsider to the First Debate and you have not done so.

While you somewhat note the existence of the First Great Debate (within IR’s canon) you do not define or expand upon what this is in a clear manner or who the debate was between. In turn, by not doing so, I feel your essay is littered with various inaccuracies and aspects that are just not clear (see also below).

You do not include 3 clear sections or fully interrogate the linguistic or political context. There is way too much repetition on display and these ‘wasted’ words need to be allocated towards other aspects of the question.

Further to this, you need to define your terms and provide a deeper exposition. In this way, you need to unpack the key points you make and the terminology/vocabularies utilised. For example, you mention the balance of power but do not concretely explain what this is or why it might be relevant. To add to this, there are many instances whereby you introduce a point/argument and then you do not develop this or link it to the course material.

Moreover, your approach to referencing is highly problematic. Large portions of your essay require supporting evidence in the form of references, and even when you do attempt to do this, it is incorrect or incomplete as you mostly do not include pages numbers.

On top of this, there are a number of areas in the essay which lack clarity and I am not too sure what argument you are trying to make. At the same time, you put forward many inaccuracies and the discussion does not always remain relevant to the question at hand (see in text comments).

During the Enlightenment period of the 18th and 19th centuries, the social world contained a “natural” order that could be discovered by the scientific method, thus a “modern” form of thought or philosophy emerged. In the decades of the 70s and 80s a new group, called “post-modernists” rebuked the modernists thought; the post modernists also concluded that there are no universally accepted “grand narratives” prescribing a cure for crime. Rather, they advanced the proposition that crimes were what official institutions defined them as –thus, a “new” way to understand crime causation arose.

Feminist scholars provided new perspectives in “gendering criminology” in important ways. For decades, women offenders and victims were ignored. Referencing
It is crucial that you properly reference the essay. The basic idea behind referencing is that you should acknowledge where you have drawn on the words and/or the ideas of other scholars. Whilst most of you are probably familiar with a bibliography/reference list – a list of the sources you have consulted in your research for an essay – it is important to remember that academic referencing at university level goes beyond this. In addition to providing a bibliography/reference list, you are required to use footnotes or in-text references and where, appropriate, quotation marks, to indicate during your essay where you have drawn on the work of others. You must also make sure that the references you provide are accurate (for example, that the source you are referencing makes the point that you claim it does), and that the sources you use are reputable. If you do not reference properly, you are open to allegations of plagiarism and/or academic misconduct, which, if proven, can result in very severe penalties. Choose only three (3), from the eight (8) Problems with the Use of Punishment that are listed in this section. In your own words, briefly outline the problems listed concerning the use of punishment. In your reflection, discuss your personal thoughts about punishment –relate your reflection to real-life experiences (what factors play a role in how we view punishment; does culture play a role?).

1 – Punishing one behavior may simply result in a generalized suppression of other behaviors. A child who has been punished for playing aggressively will not necessarily begin playing more cooperatively; she might instead simply stop playing with other children, which is not at all what was intended.

2 – Punishment might simply teach the individual to avoid the person who delivered the punishment. A child who is severely punished by her father might begin minimizing the time she spends with her father. This would obviously be less than ideal, especially if the father has much to offer the child.

3 – Because punishment often has an immediate effect in stopping an unwanted behavior, the use of punishment is often strongly reinforced. If hitting one’s children has the immediate effect of getting them to stop making noise (an immediate negative reinforcer), then the behavior of hitting them has been strongly reinforced. The use of punishment can therefore be quite seductive, enticing the parent to use it more and more frequently, possibly to the point of becoming abusive.
