• Amber Case suggests that social media gives us a “second self” that is distinct from who we are our in real life. Other critics have rejected this distinction between “online self” and “real self” as a false opposition. To what extent is our online persona so distinct that it becomes a “second self”?

• Amber Case argues: “it’s not that machines are taking over; it’s that they’re helping us to be more human, helping us to connect with each other.” Are machines making us become more human?

• Blade Runner portrays people as less human than replicants. How does the film depict people’s inhumanity? Are machines making us become less human?

• Blade Runner and The Matrix both present institutions (the Tyrell Corporation and the Machines, respectively) that control individuals. Using one or both of the films, consider to what extent technology supports and/or challenges the control of individuals.

• In Her, Theodore is asked to choose the gender of his OS, and—as it says in the film’s title—he makes it a “her.” Similarly, (the original) Siri, Alexa and Cortana are all female. (In response to criticism, some male options have be developed, but they seem to be more of an afterthought). Why are virtual assistants gendered as female?

Context

History is littered with events described as intelligence failures, in the 1940’s Pearl Harbour epitomises the apparent outcome of catastrophic intelligence failure. In the 1960’s there is the failed Bay of Pigs operation and in the 1970’s there was Israel’s failure to anticipate the Yom Kippur war. In 2001 it was the failure to anticipate the terror attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York. In 2021 it was the failure to anticipate the speed with which the Taliban would advance on and capture Kabul as allied forces withdrew from Afghanistan. Are all of these events simply intelligence failures or is the application of the label intelligence failure a means to obscure investigation into other factors that may have contributed to a sub optimal policy or operational outcome?

Intelligence failure is to some degree accepted as inevitable however, that does not mean the factors that contribute to intelligence failure should be acceptable. Over the years intelligence failure has been subject to judicial, administrative and scholarly examination, the result being a substantive body of literature on the causal factors of failure.

Question

Have the causal factors of intelligence failure changed over the last 70-80 years?

Examine the literature on intelligence failure specifically focusing on the events of Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the more recent “intelligence failure” of US/Australian forces inability to anticipate the speed with which the Taliban was able to take back control of Afghanistan in 2021. What factors contributed to the failure in each case? Are there common factors? Are there any significant points of difference? Support your argument/discussion with evidence drawn from the wider intelligence literature.

1.)Design 2 substantively different user interfaces (UI) for input that meet DNA & Your Ancestry’s system requirements as captured in your System Requirements Document. List the system requirement(s) that each of the UIs is designed to meet (be thorough and specific).
These need not be functional but they must follow the principles and guidelines discussed in the textbook and lecture notes. Refer to Figures 8-10 and 8-11 examples of what you need to produce in this question.
You can use PowerPoint, MS Access, or any other application in which to create your UIs. Note that your UIs must look exactly as you would like them to appear in the final IS.
A login screen or main menu screen will not be accepted.
2)For output design, develop at least 2 output screens in dashboard and 2 reports to be printed that meet DNA and Your Ancestry’s system requirements as captured in your System Requirements Document. List the system requirement(s) that each of the UIs is designed to meet.
Dashboard screens and reports must be substantively different.
Populate your UIs with enough dummy (i.e. made up) data so that it illustrates fully the report format to meet DNA & Your Ancestry’s output system requirements.
Use the detailed report in Figure 8-15 as a guideline and make sure that you include all the necessary aspects in all your reports.
Note that in reports, numbers are right-justified; the text is left-justified.
You can use PowerPoint, MS Access, or any other application in which to create your output screens and reports. Note that your output must look exactly as you would like it to be in the final IS. For example, if there are grid lines on your UI I will assume that you intend for the user to see it that way.
Some general tips for the term project on Chapter 8
Don’t forget to list an associated system requirement that each UI is designed to meet in your accompanying text.
A total of 6 designs (2 UI, 2 output screens, and 2 reports) are required for this assignment.
Please submit a word document. You can save your designs as image files, copy and paste images, or insert screenshots of your designs.
Example:
User interfaces – If you had an input system requirements like “An user must enter their names, contact information, and select which service they want to use via web application,” you can create an interface where the user can enter these information and submit it. This interface can display buttons, icons, and form entries.
Output screens – If you selected an output system requirement like, “The new IS must create daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly reports for the employees” (your system requirements should be more specific), an output screen can display a summary of information of their sales or new customers. It can include some charts or plots.
Reports – It can be a table format including texts and figures as you can see from an example in the textbook.
You are designing imaginary screens and reports that meet the system requirements. The designs should display necessary elements. After then, you could focus on creating nice-looking graphics included in your screens, but I do not expect the expert-level graphic designs.

Conclusion: Think of the conclusion as a review of your argument. Use this section to restate your argument and remind readers of your supporting evidence. This paragraph is your last chance to persuade readers to agree with you.
Briefly summarize the main points of your essay. This section should consist of a brief review of your main ideas.
Draw conclusions based on your evidence.
Use evidence that you have found to wrap up the essay in a meaningful way that makes a connection to your audience.

Choose A topic that interest you and deals with the 2010s Pose a research question, then explore that question using credible sources and evidence. Make sure you are interested in the topic you choose. Some possible topics include: a popular figure from the decade a pop star or tv figure, the politics of the decade, the rise of the internet, social media, fads, fashion or sports. It is your choice, but once you choose the topic, make sure to narrow your focus.
