critique of Franklin Roosevelt

Overview: Now that you have given an overview of your historic figure Franklin Roosevelt, I want you to evaluate them as a person. No one is perfect and that is true for historical figures as well as contemporary ones, and so I want you to describe three ways your person could have done a better job, been a better person, or generally did not live up to their potential. I would also like you to use two secondary sources (lectures, readings, or the book you chose) but also two primary sources to make your Critique. I recommend primary sources created by your figure or by their detractors, but it is up to you.

Structure: Your paper should be between 2-3 pages double-spaced and should follow a five-paragraph essay format and the first thing you need to do is to come up with a general criticism of the figure that explains why the failed in the three ways you are going to describe. There are two major categories that might be useful to you: societal failings (blind spots that were common among people of the time) and personal failings (personal prejudice or character flaws). Once you have selected a flaw, choose three examples of when that demonstrate that flaw and these will be your three body paragraphs. In your last paragraph you should summarize the examples you just gave and end with a thought of how history might be different if your figure had acted differently.

Citations: For this assignment I want you to use at least one primary source and two secondary sources. Whenever you use your sources, you should cite it using Chicago Manual of Style in either a footnote or an endnote. Check the Finding Sources and Citing Sources pages in Lesson 2.3 if you would like a reminder on where to look for sources and how to cite them. Make sure to use the correct format for your footnotes well as it is a part of your grade.

A student tells their professor that it is the professor’s “fault” that they are on academic probation, which will “ruin their life.”
A parent tells her teen not to binge drink and the teen yells, “Who are you to judge me? You did the same thing when you were my age!”
An employer tells a recent college graduate that they know more because they went to the “school of hard knocks,” and “you think you’re better than the rest of us—well, I’ve got news for you—you’re not! I’ve forgotten more than you will ever know about this business!”
A client in treatment for alcohol dependence tells the therapist that they got drunk because they were at a party and they “had to drink to fit in.” The client goes on to say, “One or two drinks isn’t going to kill me, so stop overreacting!!”For this forum, consider the following examples of defensiveness. Pick two of these examples and identify the defense mechanism at work, explain your reasoning, then use Gibb’s analysis of defensive communication to explain how the defensiveness might be overcome.

Individually, search the University Library for 1 peer-reviewed research study with possible ethical concerns. When you select your research study, consider the possible ethical issues in the research process, such as sampling, methodology, data collection, etc. Focus on the research study, not the health issue.

Share your selected research study with your group.

Read the research studies shared by the other group members to prepare for your discussion.

Note: You may use a research study you identified in a previous assignment, if appropriate. However, you may not use any article discussed in this group discussion for your Wk 5 – Summative Assessment: Ethical Scenario Presentation.

Due Monday: Discussion
Discuss the following with your group:

What are the possible ethical issues within the research studies?
How might ethical concerns influence the research outcomes of these research studies?
What is the research design validity and how can research bias can impact validity? (Hint: Research how design validity and instrumentation validity are different concepts.)
How can stakeholders externally influence health care research?
