Paper Introduction (1/2 to 1 page)
-Produce an introduction to your social movement organizations and your social movement in about 1 page. Identify a national and/or local (city, county or state) movement organization, and provide their history in about half a page, with a short description of the social movement of which they are a part (no more than 1 page total for the intro, and no quotations in this part). Include a link to their websites in the bibliography. The rest of the paper will be about this movement. The second paper should use the same movement, and thus may reuse the same introduction from the first paper. Aside from the movement and introduction, the rest of the second paper must be unique from paper 1.

NEWS MEDIA EVIDENCE AND THREE THEORIES (1-2 pages)
Use of Proquest news database (or google news/similar) to research your movement — collect at least 10 documents covering at least one concept/measurement of at least one of the following – political opportunity, resource mobilization, or framing.
The measurement you choose must be specific, and you need to describe which single measure you used for each theory. Choose just just one measure for each theory – don’t report findings that are not meaningful, instead just choose a different measure. The valid measures are below:
your movement and some aspect of political opportunity theory (e.g., politicians, demographic change, generations, events, repression)
your movement and some aspect of resource mobilization theory (e.g., tactics, volunteers, funding, leaders)
your movement and some aspect of framing theory {e.g., collective action frames, frame alignment strategies, etc]
In the paper, you need to write is a summary of what you found in the news search. To do this, discuss at least one theme for each theory you chose, with at least three quotes for each theme. The theme would be something more specific you learned in the news articles about your concept. If its leaders you chose as your concept for resource mobilization, then the theme might be something related to context where the movement leader is mentioned, and the quotes might be 3 different examples showing different contexts where the movement leader is mentioned (e.g., while speaking at a rally, while speaking on a tv show, etc). And your theme could be the content or some other important factor that you found regarding how the leader acted in these 3 examples. You can present more than one theme, but each theme needs to have three quotes. In the paper, you should interpret the theme and explain how the quote is an example of the theme, and then provide the actual quote. This should be done for each quote presented. You should reference and discuss in a few sentences the course readings that discuss the theory/concept you used.
RESOURCE MOBILIZATION, pt 1 – funding (1-2 pages)
First, in a few sentences discuss/reference one of the resource mobilization readings that discusses funding (e.g. homeless and civil rights rights movements). Second, write about the possible funding, volunteer or other “free” resources available that might help your movement. This should be mainly based on search of the library funding database (guidestar at Madden, and others at Fresno city library and others such as “grant station”). Third, spend a few sentences discussing possible fundraising support through crowdfunding and other alternative means (e.g., fundly, kindful, donorsearch, doublethedonation, charityauctionstoday, etc).
Guidestar is a library database, so the librarians can help, but you can also search under “G” when you get to the Madden databases.

How might your movement build a coalition with some of these groups: Write a few sentences about what the new groups have in common with your group, and what differences the groups would need to address if they were to unite in a coalition.

In this article there is a table with a list of most of the types of concepts that have been considered as part of resource mobilization. Your task in this section would be to reference/discuss this source in a few sentences, define the concept you chose, and use at least one of these concepts to examine news, social media or online sources, in order to find examples of the concept(s) you chose that relate to your movement. Describe the concept and the quote from your source, then present the quote. Repeat 3 times (one for each quote).

Use the SDAsite to find an opinion question on the cause of your movement, run chi squared analyses for geography, race, class (and any other variables you find interesting such as gender, age, education), report findings about allies and resisters, and make suggestions about how the movement might reach out to these allies and resisting groups, particularly by using specific framing strategies. Make sure to specifically use the framing concepts from the readings — use at least one framing concept as an ideal strategy for reaching the allied or resisting group in each table.(frame alignment, frame bridging, frame amplification, etc. — see the Intro chapter, Best chapter, Kubal reading and others for examples). In a few sentences, use the literature to discuss/reference the concepts you chose. Of course, you need more than just broad statements, you need to offer a few suggestions about actual re-wordings, using the framing strategies, that might reach and mobilize people who are allies or resisters.

Use Ncapture to capture tweets on your movement and use Nvivo to analyze those tweets in relation to some aspect of framing, resource mobilization, or political opportunity. In the paper, you need to produce a word cloud based on these tweets, and interpret it in one sentence. You need to produce at least one theme you found interesting within the twitter data, and produce and interpret three quotes as a reflection of this theme. You are encouraged to present more than one theme, but if you do, remember that each theme you present needs to have three quotes. You should interpret the theme and explain how the quote is an example of the theme, and then provide the actual quote. This should be done for each quote presented.
The next part of your social media presentation involves a few paragraphs of writing interpreting the charts you will present in your paper from the Social Media analysis you complete with Nvivo:
1) bar chart [or map] from Nvivo on city in the USA with the most twitter activity
2) bar chart[s] from Nvivo on the year, month and day of the week when their movement has received the most action on Twitter
3) at least one other bar chart from Nvivo that you think might be informative to the movement
The above instructions will allow you to present the findings from your twitter search in a way that describes how twitter-sphere is portraying the movement, by referencing twitter coverage of one of the theories: framing, resource mobilization and political opportunity. Make sure to use the readings to develop a few sentences describing the theory/concept you chose.
