Discussion Post: Rae, Moral Choices, Ch. 15, “Race, Gender, and Diversity,” pp. 429-435 and either material on race/racism or material on gender. Discuss a point that you found to be the most insightful or challenging in this reading.

This paper is the major writing assignment for this course. Each student will arrange to interview, observe and interact with two subjects (separately). The subjects cannot be a relative of the student, and RELATIVE IS DEFINED AS ANY PERSON RELATED BY BLOOD, MARRIAGE, OR CO-HABITATION, but can be someone they already know or someone they are meeting for the first time to do this assignment.) You need to make up a fictional name for the person in your paper and state that you are not using their correct name. Ideally, one subject should be a young adult between the ages of 25 and 34. The other subject should be a late adult between the ages of 65 and 85 (or older). After interviewing each subject, you will write narrative essay describing what you were told by each subject about their life. You must use the material discussed in class as well as other material to help you explain each subjects’ life story. For instance, were these subjects similar to the material or case studies we studied, and were there things about the subjects that appeared to be different from the material we studied? You should approach writing the paper from a life course perspective, looking at developmental issues and transitions that commonly occur during young adulthood or late adulthood, respectively. At the beginning of each section, be sure you give the person’s age and a description of the environment in which you did the interview and interactions (were you in the person’s home? at school? eating in a restaurant? etc.). What would theorists we have studied, such as Erikson and Piaget, say about this person’s development? You should divide the paper into two sections, one of each subject. Papers must be typed and double-spaced and must use APA format. In addition to the textbook, you will need to use a minimum of five outside sources, all of which must be peer-reviewed. Your paper should be at least 8 pages in length (not counting the cover page, references or any other additional material.)

Purpose
This assignment invites you to explore an area of addic7on and to review the current
organiza7ons, governmental and/or non-governmental agencies responding to this
issue. Students may choose an area of addic7on that interests them. This is a research
assignment which will require exploring both addic7on and community resources.
You may include the course resources and will also need to look beyond.
Some of the research may be academic in nature, i.e. ar7cles/ textbooks, and some may be
more popular e.g. reliable websites, governmental/ community agencies/ organiza7ons,
and also videos, Podcasts, and things of that nature.

In 1000 words , write an expository essay that tackles the following questions. Don’t use external sources from the library to back up you but rather evidence from your primary source material (the article you’re writing about) to back up your thesis.

Essay’s question: In “The Age of Instagram Face”, writer Jia Tolentino describes the emergence, through social media platforms, of a “single, cyborgian face” (3). In what ways is this face reflective of our modern-day culture at large, and how does she become impacted in her own self-identity through the process of her literary investigation? In a 5-paragraph essay with a clearly outlined thesis statement, and using examples from the text, discuss.

Individual Semi-structured Interview Report
This individual assignment constitutes the capstone of your learning in this course (To my writer: the book is in another document, note the chapter 10 is Independent ), aside from the final exam.
The individual structured interview and report assignment requires you to identify a practicing consultant, set up an appointment with the chosen consultant (To my writer: so I think you can pretend I did that and imagine a consultant and place him in a specific position with a specific Canadian consulting firm, maybe you can choose one person from Lindedln), use the questionnaire (To my writer: in another document), conduct the interview, and write a report summarizing the main points of the interview. The goal is for you to learn from a practicing consultant, what the job actually entails.

The mechanics of the report
1- For the Interview report, as the directions say, choose 10 questions. The interviews will be quite long. Leave out the question that is the least interesting/valuable for you. Use the sub-questions to better understand the main question. You may not need to ask all the sub-questions. They are there to prompt the interviewee it you need to.
2- Ask the questions, write the summarized answer, and link it briefly to the course content. Some answers will be longer than others obviously but if the question and answer take half a page that should be sufficient. Attach the actual survey and responses in the appendix..
NOTE: The instructions indicate the number of words (4000 to 5000) that the report should not exceed. While I have suggested a shorter version, you can write up to between 4000 and 5000 words. Use the amount of words, up to the specified limit, that you need to prepare a good report.
3- Re: citations/references – if the content in the answer links to course content, then indicate that the response supported/contradicted/other the course content. If you use course content, reference it.
4- No outside sources are required.
5- Make sure to use 12 point font, double space response summaries, regular borders
6- Format for the report – List the question and provide the answer. The question can be single spaced. The response should be double spaced.
7 – Please begin the report with some background on your interviewee–who you interviewed — first name only, job title, company name or type of company.
I hope you enjoy the interview, and learn from it. If you have questions that are not on the survey, but are interesting to you, and you have the time, ask the questions. I don’t need to see those; it’s just an opportunity for you to learn about the consultant’s job.
This individual assignment has 20% of your total grade assigned to it. The report will be graded out of 100 points based on the following criteria:
• 10% for form, format, style
• 10% for coherence and clarity
• 70% for key findings and issues (breadth and depth)
• 10% for summary of what was learned in the interview that you did not know before (usefulness of the interview; one page at the end to conclude the report)

For this assignment, you’ll choose one aspect of traveling to another culture as covered in the I’m Headed on an Adventure ppt in Tuesday’s class. V. Guidelines for the term/research paper:

A. The paper’s length should be ten (10) pages.

B. The paper must be typed.

C. There should be at least 12 entries in the Bibliography. (Only three references from all internet sources.)

Your next assignment will be a research paper: a ten-page, double-spaced, typed paper, with a work cited page and twelve references. (Select your topic only from the syllabus.) Check pages 10 and 11 of your syllabus for the specific requirements. Remember that twelve references are required from various sources. Do not use Wikipedia, or any other unreliable sources.

Journals: Each student will be required to do two journal reviews. Each paper (approximately 2-4 pages) will be a review of a sociological journal article which is an article describing a “study” that was conducted. There is further and detailed information on the journal in this syllabus. It is best if you complete one journal and then wait for the results of that journal before you complete the second review. However, you may complete them as you wish, but they must be submitted before the end of the semester.
Journal Review
The student must review an article that has been published in a sociological journal. Many journals are located on the campus of SWCC in the library. The student may locate the article from other libraries. The student must select an article from the following sources: Deviant Behavior, American Sociological Review, Sociological Focus, American Journal of Sociology, Contemporary Sociology, Social Forces, Journal of Marriage and Family or Rural Sociology (no others will be accepted unless you have specific permission from the instructor). You must select a complete article (not a review) from one of the above journals; no articles from popular magazines will be accepted. Do not send in reviews that are not from these journals, you will receive a zero if you use a psychology journal.
The following are the questions that each student must answer for the journal review. The questions must be type written or computer generated, no handwritten work will be accepted. The student is expected to submit a paper using correct spelling with all typographical errors corrected.
Each question must be answered. It is best if you list the question with the answer.
1. What is the title of the article? List the journal name and when it was published.
2. Who is the author(s)? What does the article say about the people who wrote this article, for example, what is the author’s occupation, and what reasons do he/she/they present for writing this article?
3. Briefly describe areas where the author(s) have studied similar topics.
4. What are the conditions of the research? Who did the author study and how were they chosen? What was the total number of participants and when was the study conducted? In other words, how did they obtain the information for their research?
***(If you cannot answer this question from the journal that you have selected then you have not selected an appropriate article.)
5. What did the authors discover, what did they prove or disprove? What conclusions did they make from doing this piece of research? What are the future implications of this study?
6. What is your personal conclusion about this study? What was it that you disliked or like about the study? Your statements can be positive or negative, but they must be directly related to the specific information that was presented in the article. Here you should be thoughtful and use insight in your conclusion.
You must answer each of the above six (6) questions. You may not be able to answer all the parts of each question because the journal articles differ. You still must present at least a paragraph on each question (or more). I will return your first journal review, with comments to explain the grade, after you have received that grade you should then proceed to your second review which follows the same format. Keep in mind the following:
1. You should only pick articles that you are interested in reading.
2. You should proofread all your typed or computer- generated work before you submit it for grading. You may want to have someone read your article to find some of your errors. You may want to write the review and then re-read it several days later to find the errors.
3. Write clearly by defining everything that you are writing about in the review. Do not assume that the instructor knows the term. The instructor wants to know if the student understands the term or concept.
4. The goal of this assignment is to tell the instructor that you have read a piece of research and you understand it. Do not copy information word-for-word unless you use quotations marks.
5. Answer each question completely to receive a high grade on this assignment.
