the american dream signifies the ability of any citizen to achieve material prosperity. in more recent times the american dream for some means the right to choose to live a simpler or more fulfilling lifestyle. in either case the dream’s foundation is its universal achievability.
In Of mice and men (arthur miller) and Death of a salesman (john steinbeck) the authors present two versions of the american dream. in a developed essay compare and contrast these literary works by commenting on: the characters’ perception of the american dream, their obstacles to achieving the american dream, and the isolating impact of chasing the often elusive american dream. In both works the american dream is shown through edenic references.

The American Dream is the ideal of equality of opportunities, however, opportunities and dreams can be thwarted by both internal and external forces. The novella, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, and the play Death of A Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, demonstrate two different examples of unrealized dreams. George and Lennie, characters in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, fail to achieve their dream due to birth and societal circumstances. By contrast Willy Loman, a character in Miller’s Death of A Salesman, cannot attain his dream because of his own choices and his delusions of the achievability of the American Dream.
