Monkey (from Journey to the West) can be considered a “trickster.” What characteristics define this archetype? Identify one or two other “tricksters” in popular culture. These examples could be drawn from movies, novels, comics, or television. Compare these modern tricksters to Monkey.
Imagine you’ve been asked to write a screenplay of either Monkey or The Epic of Gilgamesh, but you must choose between them. In this paper, explain your choice. What factors (personal or commercial) would inform your decision? What scenes would you cut from the script – or definitely include? How close could you keep to the original material and still make the film successful? [This paper can be more informal in style, but must still include analysis of the texts, as well as quotations to illustrate your points.]

As you will be expected to provide specific examples to support your arguments, all analytical papers should include citations. You are discouraged from using material outside the course (this is not a research paper), but if you do you must include full bibliographical information. In-text citation is acceptable for materials from the course, and should include the author and page number.
