Essay #1:
NUESTRA EXPERIENCIA EN AZTLÁN
Understanding the Voices of Aztlán—the Struggle of a People
Purpose:
The purpose of this paper is to provide students an opportunity to analyze, evaluate, and further develop the concepts of intergenerational historical trauma, internalized oppression, and self-hatred by way of situating the role of the personal narrative to further contextualize Chicano-Xicanx history, struggles, and resources. Students will also be given the opportunity to deeply reflect on the relevance of this course content to their own lives, families, communities, and future professions.
Readings:
Required-
Gonzales and Rodriguez on Intergenerational Historical Trauma (Links to an external site.)
Choose Two-
Confessions of a Xicana (COAX): Dismantling Shame While Walking with the Ancestors and Transforming Pain Into Beauty by Moreno Sandoval, Cueponcaxochitl D. and Miriam G. Valdovinos
Memoria de Aztlán: One Xicano’s Journey by Maldonado, José A.
Living Life as a Ceremony: Identity, Sacredness and Healing by Coronado, Heidi M.
Writing Task:
Compare/contrast the ways in which the concepts of intergenerational historical trauma, internalized oppression, and self-hatred, as defined by Gonzales and Rodriguez, apply to at least two of the other readings included in Unit #2 of In Search of Our Brown Selves. Evaluate the relevance of the personal narratives (including the strategies related to coping and healing) to your own personal life. Describe, in detail, how you might further develop or design innovative ways to incorporate this material into your family life, community involvement, and future profession.
Guidelines:
Keep in mind the role of Bloom’s Taxonomy as a resource to guide your ability to demonstrate what you have learned in Unit #2. The Start-of-Unit and End-of-Unit questions helped you demonstrate your ability to remember, understand, and apply. In this composition assignment, you should focus on highlighting the skills of analysis, evaluation, and creation (or further development) of the core concepts of intergenerational historical trauma, internalized oppression, and self-hatred. PLEASE select relevant quotes from the Gonzales and Rodriguez editorials and two of the remaining three readings in Unit #2 of In Search of Our Brown Selves: A Transdisciplinary Reader. ALSO, include evidence of your personal reflection and integration of the course material in ways that are authentic and meaningful to you.
