“Also studied was the relationship between race and incarceration. Saperstein and Penner (2010) studied the effect of incarceration on racial perceptions. The secondary analysis was of the 1979 cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) with a sample of 12,686 young men and women who were 14-22 years old. The purpose of this research study was to analyze the relationship between blackness and crime. The research question was “Does incarceration have a lasting effect on racial perceptions?”. Saperstein and Penner hypothesized that incarcerated respondents will be less likely to identify as white and more likely to identify as Black. (p. 96). The dependent variable was racial self identification (Black, African American, Negro, English, Cuban, Vietnamese, White, Afro American, Asian, Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, American Indian) (p. 97). The independent variable in this study was type of residence (incarceration) current or previous at the time of the interview. Saperstein and Penner found that the changes in racial identification for respondents who self-identified as Black in 1979 were smaller than those for Europeans and were not significant. (pp. 101-102). They also found a statistically significant relationship between racial classification and incarceration for both currently and previously incarcerated individuals (p. 103). Saperstein and Penner too found
that those who were perceived as white pre-incarceration were more likely to be perceived as Black post-incarceration, while those who were perceived as Black pre-incarceration were more likely to be perceived as Black post-incarceration.”
