reading assignment is an essay by the science writer Michael Specter, and it appears on page 600 of your texts.
In his essay “The Gene Hackers”, an essay that concerns itself with science, unlike much of what we’ve considered this term, Michael Specter describes the progress that CRISPR technology may provide in treating illnesses, such as cancer and cystic fibrosis. Towards the end of his essay, he compares the promise of this progress against the possible nightmare of genetic manipulation for purposes of creating designer babies or a designer race. (He fails to mention other ethical questions raised by the prospect of genetic manipulation, such as flipping the switch so people can live for centuries rather than decades.) Ultimately, Specter comes down on the side of the beneficial prospects of this new technology. Where do you stand on this issue, after reading the essay? Is the manipulation of genes a prospective boon for humanity, or could it create a dystopian future of genetically manipulated people, animals, and plants? Defend your point of view by giving us examples from the current state of our world.
