This course requires the submission of a 9-10 page paper that examines a research question related to the politics and policies of urban America. With this assignment, students are expected to demonstrate their ability to identify and fully examine a topic that interests them within the various subfields of urban politics. This includes an examination of scholarly research in the forms of articles and books to learn how this question or issue has been discussed by various scholars. The assignment requires that you (1) provide background information about the problem that requires attention, (2) explain the importance of the problem (3) discuss the short- and long-term implications associated to the problem. It is important that students relate this research question and literature to current events. For ideas, review the topic areas that we will discuss in class, which can be found below in this syllabus. Also, pleasefeel free to come to office hours and discuss potential topics if necessary.
Students are expected to cite at least 8 scholarly sources (not including newspaper articles or U.S. Census Bureau). To help students develop polished final papers, an outline of the paper and annotated bibliography will be due for review, grades, and comments.
