First Steps:
● Review each of the four sections of the Brickville Case Study (Engage, Assess, Intervene, Evaluate), using the drop-down menu under the Engage, Assess, Intervene, and Evaluate tabs located across the top of the webpage http://www.routledgesw.com
● Review the writing guidelines and the assignment questions, located below.
● Provide explanations, examples, and where relevant, include material from the case
study or course readings (articles, textbook, etc.). You may also use additional appropriate resources from the internet, other textbooks, or articles, etc. to supplement your response.
Writing the Assignment:
● Title page. Use APA style for student papers. An example is available in the course information section of this course.
● Organization. For each section of the questions, below, follow these steps: post the title of the section (Engage, Assess, Intervene, Evaluate) left flushed, above the question, post the question single-spaced, then post your response, double-spaced.
● Content. Develop your responses. Provide an example or an explanation. For example, if your response to how you will engage someone to help is “I will appeal to their understanding”, provide an example from the case study and identify what information you would provide in order to “appeal to” someone’s “understanding”.
● In-text Citation. When referring to course material or other resource material in your response, APA style for in-text citations. Paraphrase. Do not use quotations directly from material.
● Reference List. Add any references at the end of your assignment in a reference list, using APA style.
ENGAGE
1. While you have been working in the community for a while at the Brickville Community Development Corporation, your contacts have been somewhat limited to youth and families. This situation may require you to interact with other institutions in the community. Describe how you might approach other institutions to engage them and begin to build trust. Include a specific example.
One of the challenges of social work is balancing various roles simultaneously. Describe at least two specific challenges and rewards in broadening your sphere of influence to institutions in the community.
Describe at least two arguments supporting social work involvement at the community level.
ASSESS
At the community level:
Discuss two examples of how you can learn about the informal power and resources in the Brickville community?
Why is it important to assess a family’s community connections when considering family dynamics?
What does it mean to “empower” community members in relation to the redevelopment plan in Brickville?
At the family level:
How will you assess family strengths in this case? Include a specific example.
How is a systems approach useful in assessing this case? Include a specific example.
INTERVENE
Discuss two social work skills and how each skill would apply in family and community practice..
How can clients be empowered to be part of the intervention process so that interventions are done ‘with’ and not to’ clients?
Explain a reason why a solution focused approach would be helpful in guiding an individual and community intervention. Provide a brief example using the Brickville case.
EVALUATE
The NASW Code of Ethics mandates evaluation of your work with clients. Nevertheless, social workers are sometimes reluctant to engage in evaluation for a variety of reasons.
1. Review each statement, below, and write a response that counters the statement and provides a reason for engaging in evaluation.
● Evaluation takes away too much time from direct practice activities.
● I don’t need data. I know in my heart when I am helping someone.
● Evaluation is a waste of time because the information never gets used.
● I’m not comfortable with numbers and statistics.
● There are not enough resources to fund evaluation.
● There are no evaluation instruments to measure the intangible things gained from social
work services.
● Evaluation instruments were not developed on the type of clients I work with, so the
measures are not useful.
● Administrators can use evaluation against me in reviewing my performance
2. Closing the Case
Discuss two reasons and explanations for when you would close a case, using an example from the Brickville Case Study.
Based on your experience so far with the four phases of generalist practice- engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation, provide a brief explanation of how you might apply one feature of each of these phases in the future with your actual clients.
