Final Assignment
Research Paper
For the final assignment, you will be drawing on the information that you have learned throughout the course to examine a current public health concern. This is also an opportunity to learn how to write a standard research paper or improve upon your existing writing and research skills. The paper will be based on academic research and health organization data. You may use graphs and charts to illustrate date. The paper should not exceed 10 paged, double-spaced, 12 point-font (excluding the title page and reference section).
Submit your work as a PDF file under the Dropbox section. For late assignments, there will be a penalty of 25% per day (24 hours) that it is late. See the Assignment Schedule for the due date.
Paper Sections
Your paper will highlight a real public health issue with a focus on your local context.
Introduction/Background
Provide a description of the health concern; what is its natural history, how is it caused, who is impacted and how?
Local Impact
Present some local statistics. If there have been recent changes in these, discuss why. Try to get as specific as possible. If local or regional data are not available, discuss the national context.
The Role of Public Health
Describe past public health efforts and their impact. What worked, what didn’t?
What are current social and public health programs aimed at addressing this concern?
Conclusion
Summarize your findings. Provide some thoughts, advice, and recommendations for further progress.
References Cited
Complete bibliography in APA style.
Topics
You may choose to write your paper on one of the following topics or you may seek approval from the instructor for another relevant topic of your choosing:
Type-two Diabetes
Obesity
Opioid drug use
Smoking and/or vaping and e-cigarettes
Sedentary behaviour (lack of exercise)
A Note on References and Citing
Throughout the body of the paper, use in-text citations to indicate when you are using information or ideas from another source. All references used should be included with complete reference information under the References Cited section at the end of your paper. Please use APA style references.
