One of the few protected rights of inmates is access to medical treatment. More detail is explained in case law. We have determined inmates are entitled to “adequate medical care.” Other cases have established the precedent that inmates are not entitled to “the most sophisticated care that money can buy.” However, in practice, suits have only been upheld against detention facilities if the inmate can show that medical services have been completely deprived (this is a violation of the 8th Amendment).
