Discuss a behavioral myth or clinically supported mental health diagnosis?

You are required to complete a research paper on an approved topic
for General Psychology. The 4-5 page (not counting the title and
reference pages), typed, double-spaced, APA formatted paper should be
based on a topic area we have covered or will cover in the course. You
should use a minimum of 4-5 peer-reviewed sources to back up and support
your ideas. Please keep direct quotes to a minimum; I much prefer that
you read and paraphrase rather than copying and pasting direct quotes
into your paper. If you do use a direct quote, make sure that it is
properly recognized with quotation marks and the citation includes the
page and/or paragraph number where I could find the passage.

Papers should have a clear thesis statement, introductory paragraph,
research based evidence to back up and support your ideas, theories and
relevant concepts integrated into illustrative examples, and a
concluding paragraph. Minimize opinions, assumptions, and biased
statements.

Topic:
ADHD: a behavioral myth or clinically supported mental health diagnosis?
Over 9% of school aged children have or will be diagnosed
with ADHD. In the US ADHD in considered a biological/neurological
disorder, treated with psycho-stimulants, diet, and behavioral
modifications. Conversely, only .5% of French children are diagnosed and
treated for ADHD symptoms. Research the biological causes and
treatments of ADHD, the rise of incidence rates, and underlying cultural
factors in ADHD. Why is a diagnosis of ADHD almost 3 times as likely in
a black child over a white one. Should “pathologize” what many
clinicians agree is normal childhood behavior? Are we overly reliant on
biological treatments to mask symptoms of very active children?
