Discuss Simple Staining results (Shape/Morphology) with
respect to each bacterial specimen and the dye used. Does the dye affect the
shape or size? Mention how difficult it is to see the shape of E. coli (they are rods but because they
are small rods, they look like cocci.)
-Discuss Gram staining with respect to each bacterial
specimen used. Stress the importance of Gram staining in identifying bacteria
with respect to shape, size and cell wall structure.
-Discuss the importance of Gram staining technique as a
first step in identifying bacteria and treating bacterial infections: some
antibiotics can kill only Gram + bacteria (thick cell wall). Once Gram status
is known, proper and specific antibiotic prescriptions can be quickly recommended
to save lives: for instance penicillin antibiotic is prescribed to kill Gram+ bacteria.
-Compare Gram staining with simple staining. Which one is
easy to perform? Which one yields more information on bacteria? Which one you
feel confortable with in regards to prescribing antibiotics? Which one can put
a name (identify) on a bacterial infection?
