Writing Prompt:
Lyman in “The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich, the narrator in “Araby” by James Joyce, and Tom in “A Woman on a Roof” by Doris Lessing display changes of character in the course of their stories. In an essay, focus on 1 character from 1 story: Lyman in “The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich, the narrator in “Araby” by James Joyce, or Tom in “A Woman on a Roof” by Doris Lessing and consider: how does the character change, and is the change positive, negative, or both? Support your argument with quotes and specific textual examples.
Your paper should be organized in the following way:
Introduction. Here you should provide some necessary information about the story you are discussing, such as a few sentences of plot summary briefly describing what causes the character to change. Mention the title and author of the story in one of those sentences. State your thesis at the end of the introductory paragraph.
Discuss the character at the early phases of the story: what word or phrase best describes the character and why?
Discuss how the character changes as the story progresses: what word or phrase best describes the character and why? (You may need more than one paragraph to describe the changes if the character you are discussing changes in the middle of the story, and then again at the end.)
Your evaluation of the character’s change: do you believe the change is positive? Negative? Both? Explain your position. (If you can identify with the character in some way or the character reminds you of someone you know and this affects your opinion of the character, you may discuss this.)
