Pick from the following options and make sure you are not a member of the group you select to conduct your research.
Native and/or Indigenous group/community
Marginalized/underrepresented group/community
A community of color
Research how this group is represented in pop culture, media, and other avenues of VISUAL representation that we as humans consume.
Step three is to review the guidelines to help you structure your essay. There are a few questions you must answer.
Discuss the portrayal of Indigenous people in that visual medium and indicate how they are represented.
Are they misrepresented? If so, how can you tell that they are misrepresented? What effect does this representation have on how the group or individual is perceived? Be specific and cite examples.
-Identify how some narratives (about your selected people) are obscured through visual culture.
-What did you find most surprising in your research and how has that new knowledge affected your thinking?
What did you believe to be true or accurate before your research?
What about the research invited you to think differently?
Set the scene. Offer up specific details. As an artist, why is this insight valuable? How can it better inform your own art practice or others’ art practices?
