Do Both Parts 1 & 2
1) The Stories (A&P, Greasy Lake, Sonny’s Blues) all deal with the process of initiation in some way. The story of initiation is a story where the central character goes through a very significant/important experience that matures them, gives them knowledge, insight, and understanding that changes them forever ad tranforms them into adults.
Discuss this initiation as it happens for Sammy(A&P) and the narrator in Greasy Lake and Sonny and his Brother in Sonny’s Blues.
Also how does the narrator’s view of the Lake change in Greasy Lake from the beginning to the end of the story.
2) A Tell-Tale Heart & A Rose for Emily are stories that are macabre, horror stories that are also known as belonging to the Gothic genre.
I want you to research the Gothic Genre – what are some of the characteristics of this genre? Some obvious elements of the genre are the mysterious, isolated mansion in an isolated spot, the dark, menacing, and brooding atmosphere, a captive in the mansion who cannot generally get out, who is also usually female, and a controlling, dominating, frightening man/husband)
Refer to some of your research in the responses to the discussion.
The Tell Tale Heart is told through the first person narration of an unreliable narrator (who is deceptive, self-deceptive, deluded, or deranged) – why is the narration so successful? What would be different if the story was told from some other perspective for example the perspective of the policemen? Similarly in A Rose for Emily, the narrator represents the citizen’s of the Town, how does that perspective influence how we perceive Emily and any sympathy we may or may not feel for her?
