Discuss whether 13th is a timely critical history of the American criminal justice system. Here, you are asked to take a larger view of the film’s significance, connecting it to the themes of power and justice. You might focus on themes of authority and discipline, as depicted by DuVernay in practices of law enforcement and incarceration. You might focus on public opinion and complicity – for example how the “war on drugs” worked on public perceptions. You might focus on how the film itself constitutes an act of resistance? What are Ava DuVernay’s justice claims? Does she propose a Path Forward? What does that look like? You have great latitude in this paper, but be sure that you communicate clearly in the opening paragraph, what you intend to do.
Focus on the overall themes presented, how can we connect the themes of power and justice, discipline, etc.
You can focus on different activists and individuals to better make a connection across. MLK, Malcolm X, Gandhi, and most importantly the Path forward project.
Paul Watson is extremely important; how do his views and perspective correlate. The path forward project should be connected to the movie.
