This week we discussed DNA sequencing. When I ran my first sequencing reaction I used radioactive labeled ddNTP’s, a 1-2 foot long polyacrylamide gel, and X-ray film. The whole process took about 2-3 days and produce about 200 base pairs of sequencing information.
Sequencing technology has advanced significantly since then. For this week’s discussion please investigate a commercially available modern DNA sequencing instrument. In 2-3 paragraphs describe the fundamental biological/chemical mechanisms which are harnessed to produce the sequence. Also, describe some of the advantages and disadvantages you see in the device.
